What is the hat etiquette at TS meals in Disney...?

Is it sort of the same as outside The World where men are expected to remove their hats but women are not? How about girls?

What have you seen?

I have seen more than one man asked to remove his hat at the signatures. I don't think anybody enforces this custom at the more casual dining locations.

but I observe military hat protocol. When I'm indoors, I uncover (period).

Can't stand to see people wearing ball caps indoors, everywhere, all the time.

Thanks for picking on one of my pet peeves.

It's definitely one of mine, too.

Men should definitely remove their hats, and I knew that. I was more concerned about what women should do.

Per Disney's signature restaurant "dress code" men are supposed to remove their hats at signature restaurants. No one else is, and I don't know if it's enforced. There is no corresponding "dress code" at any other Disney restaurant with the exception of Victoria & Alberts, which does not specifially mention hats but I am sure that men should not wear hats there.

I ate at California Grill wearing an Australian bush hat once, they didn't tell me to go away. (I'm female)

Manners and Etiquette:

1) Informal hats and caps, ballcaps, etc - men and women
. . . remove them upon going indoors & restaurant
. . . carry them to table or hat rack
. . . some experts say remove at table even when eating outdoors
. . . unfortunately, it is becoming accepted in fast food eateries

2) Formal hat, fedora, tophat, etc - men
. . . same as #1

3) Formal hats, bonnets, etc - women
. . . proper to wear at table and while eating
. . . optional to remove while eating
. . . in either case, may wear indoors & through restaurant to/from table

4) Military
. . . men and women have different rules
. . . men *usually* do not wear indoors unless ceremonial or under arms
. . . women can wear at indoors and at most meals
. . . other times, they follow with men and remove
. . . other times, they don't follow with men and don't remove
. . . yes, the difference can get complicated to the casual observer

NOTE:
Most people do not understand when to not wear a hat.
Especially indoors.
Let alone hat customs, like men tipping/lifting the hat.
Or, removing when talking to someone, even outdoors.

Thanks. I knew what the traditional customs were... I just wondered if they applied at WDW... kwim?

I wasn't referring to women wearing ball caps... I was referring more to a sunhat... not a bucket hat, but a sunhat... kwim?

And I bet #4 varies by branch

The first time Alabama (I like Auburn, but we respect The Bear) played in the Superdome, some reporter asked how a Southern gentleman like Bear Bryant would wear his hat inside the Superdome. Coach Bryant said he always removed his hat in anybody's mother's home. And that's the rule many of us live by. But that means at 50's PTC you better take that hat off.

So if I'm wearing a cute baseball hat to the park because my hair will NOT behave I'm expected to take it off in a restaurant?! Sorry about poor etiquette but nobody wants to see what I'd look like if that was the case!

"Cute baseball hat" is an oxymoron.

The girls and I are going with sunhats... so, I'm figuring we'll keep them on... the idea of my hair after it's been under a sun hat in photos during a character meal does not make me want to go anywhere! ;)

Why not just carry a small brush or comb in your bag, and duck into the ladies room before going into the restaurant? I often wear a baseball cap in the parks, and I'd rather take a minute or two to comb my hair than wear that hat in a sit-down restaurant.

Especially if there are photos involved, I'll bet you're gonna want everyone "neat and pretty", as Mickey used to say. :)

The direct answer to the question is at Signature restaurants only, men are not allowed to wear hats. There is no such prohibition at any of the other TS spots, nor is the hat rule at the Signatures enforced for the ladies.

I have, from time to time, seen ladies with various styles of hats at Signature restaurants, tho I will say it is the exception rather than the rule.

This is what I do before going to the restaurants if possible. If not, then I use the restroom in the restaurant. Inside or out, if I am at a table and anyone is eating, I take my hat off.

DW is SO huge with SOOOO many people from all walks of life. With that said, you have to just shrug it off. There will always be people who wear a hat inside a restaurant. Just like there will always be people who bring babies to the movies, or who dress very inappropriatly. There's nothing you can do, we can't change them, so you have to decide. Do you let the guy wearing his hat ruin your meal, or do you choose to ignore it and enjoy your day. I always go with the latter. :thumbsup2

I don’t wear hats so my comment is not from the pov of a hat wearer....but why does people wearing hats indoors and while eating bother people so much? I am not looking to start an argument i just want to 'get it'. It’s not like smoking or cussing in the sense that those actions have a direct effect on other people. Someone’s hat does not cause anything to happen to another person. So i just don’t see the problem. The hat is not going to blow smoke in my face or deliver inappropriate words to my kids ears. :confused3
