Has your childhood neighborhood changed?

Mine sure has. We're temporarily living with my parents in the house I grew up in, and the neighborhood is so different now.

Not nearly as many kids around. Mostly older retirees. Alot of the houses are in shabby shape, probably due to the fact that the owners are elderly now.

Urban sprawl is beginning to take over.

It's like a shell of it's old self in a way. Sorta sad.

How has your childhood neighborhood changed? Or has it stayed relatively the same?

Mine is almost exactly the same. It's always been a starter neighborhood for up and coming professionals - doctors, lawyers, etc. The houses are very small compared to other neighborhoods, but the sense of community is famous in our city. Couples who start out there often make lifelong friends with their next door neighbors.

They celebrate the holidays together. At Christmas a fire truck comes with Santa riding on the back, and he hands out cookies and hot chocolate. The neighborhood Easter Egg hunt is a great tradition, but the real celebration takes place on the Fourth of July. Giant flags are draped from the trees on one side of the street to the trees across the street, and there is a great parade with block parties afterward. When I lived there, we celebrated the Bicentennial at a local church and had everyone who had ever lived in the neighborhood invited back to party.

It's a great neighborhood - if my girls end up living here as adults, I'd love for them each to start out there, too!

That's so funny because we're also back in my parents house now while we are waiting for the closing on our new home The neighborhood is exactly the same way with 90% of the same neighbors since when I was a child.

It's not so bad for me, but I feel bad for my dh - he feels he can't just do what he would normally do when we are in our own home - not like he wants to walk around naked or anything , but just doing your own thing, kwim? My dd's love it, they keep saying this is the longest sleepover ever - we've been here a month already and our attorney told us yesterday it may be another month till closing because the homeowner is a divorced teacher and she's waiting for school to be over ( 6/23 ) and people have to help her... She'd better hurry up because things around here will get interesting if we have to stay much longer than that!!

Grew up in Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Very nice tree lined street, convienent shopping...who needed a car? Walk the streets at midnight without a care, EVERYBODY knew EVERYBODY.

Now it is a the after effects of a WARZONE!
