Has Eisner truly lost his mind?

To clear up some misunderstandings--

My original post dealt not with whether movies critical of the military (or America for that matter) should be produced and distributed and viewed and discussed--I have no problem with that. Nor do I have any difficulty "thinking for myself." My original post was questioning DISNEY's involvement with yet another controversial independent film being put out by Miramax.

As for whether the film would actually have a harmful effect on our troops overseas, I highly doubt it, just as I don't think Natalie Maines' comments in England about being ashamed of President Bush had any effect on troop morale (I went to the Dixie Chicks concert last week and enjoyed it immensely, BTW). I was simply listing reasons why many Americans might be offended or outraged by the movie.

At the same time, I could really do without the snobbish sanctimony of movie critics who equate patriotism with cowardice and who consider those who love America as the ones with the problem, as evidenced by this quote from Robert O'Connor:

***For these people what matters most is not pissing on the flag, not questioning the status quo***

And consider this gem:

***It’s about a dumb period of US military history when manpower at any cost was the motto of the higher ups. ***

Yes, that horrible war against the poor Communists. What a "dumb period." Surely the people of North Korea, Cuba, and China would agree. . .

Nice try, PKS44, but I'm not buying what you're selling. We make judgments about movies all the time without seeing them. True, sometimes these judgments prove to be wrong. For example, I thought Pirates of the Caribbean would suck (judging from the previews), but I saw it the other day and quite enjoyed it.

-snip-

Nor do I need to see the film to know that I'd be offended by it, just as I never needed to see Robert mapplethorpe's works of alleged art to make a judgment about it. The description of people trampling on the US Flag is enough for me to know I don't want to put money in the pockets of the folks who made this movie. (Of course, i'm still going to WDW in October--woohoo!)

As I said-"Funny thing is that I usually like to actually SEE a film before I protest it and condmemn it" As you pointed out you can be dead wrong with your predetermined judgements...I would feel pretty foolish if I went out and protested and condemned something that I had never seen -then when I actually saw it I thought was pretty good...that would make me feel very foolish--that is just me--some people may not be bothered by raising a fuss over something that they later decided was not worth raising a fuss over...certainly the whole Mapplethorpe thing- which I actually have seen- was way too much about nothing IMHO..but what do I know, I have actually seen the work and judged it for myself...If I had seen it and hated it as some apparently did- then making a fuss would seem to me to be perfectly reasonable...Given the significant errors of other people's judgement that I have seen in the past, I personally require more information before I get outraged about something.

Deciding whether I want to spend time and money to see a movie and deciding whether I will protest or get outraged about something are very different decisions for me... To answer the question...I have not seen "From Justin to Kelly...I also have not expressed any moral outrage about it either.

*Breaking news...Disney's next movie will be a real live "snuff" film.*

- Ok everybody hold judgment and outrage until you see it.

Sorry, EUROPA...

I had no idea. I just saw the action getting intense and it seemed like it would be more fit for the Debate Board.

It was only a suggestion...

anotherboardnposter...

... I, for what's it's worth, agree with you that this thread should go to the debate board. Not because of its intensity (properly directed, intensity is a very good thing), but because of its direction: this is a political "debate," not a Disney "debate."

I agree with Jeff. I think we should talk about religion for a while instead.

But first, did any of y'all go see "City of God," or "Jet Lag," or "Blue Car," or "The Quiet American?"

For that matter, does anyone know what these four movies have in common?

Alright!! Religion! I'm up for it!

How about how religion influences your choices of pie and movies?

D-R, what do the movies have in common? And how does your religion, or lack therof, help you decide on pie?

By the way, DVC, is that your final answer?? :p

By the way, DVC, is that your final answer??
Ah... Let me think about it for a minute.............
