I have a bad sinus infection and took one at the Drs. It made me nauseous. Now I don't want to take it again but I know I need to.

What is your experience?

I assume you mean Bactrim/Septra...I have taken this ever day for 15 + years to prevent AIDS related pnuemonia...Yes,it has been known to make me nauseaus or feel feverish.

My MIL has taken bactrim for UTIs and she has gotten very sick-nauseous, dizzy, etc.

I've tried a lot of different ones for sinus infections. The only one that works for me w/o making me sick is Augmentin. Hope you feel better.

Makes my daughter incredibly sick. Tell your dr. there are probably alternatives that they could prescribe. My dd has taken it in the past for kidney infections and it seems to be one of the first they go for, I just ask for something different. There are tons of different options.

my doctor prescribed me this a few weeks ago for my sinus infection which was pretty bad.

the first day it made my stomach feel really weird, and then the next day i started having trouble breathing from it(i have asthma, so certain things can trigger breathing problems.....WHICH he should have known.....*is searching for a new doctor*) so i ended up stopping that and going on a different med.

My DH is taking Bactrim as we speak for a BAD sinus infection. He is having no side affects and is getting better! :thumbsup2

Yes, I always feel worse when I take it. I think the worst part of it for me is the nasty taste it leaves in my mouth.

Well I took it, I'm scared to death but I took it. I don't want to feel bad.

So if I'm going to feel bad how long will it take. Or if I'm NOT going to feel bad (Hopefully) how long will it take?

If the Bactrim makes you nauseous, it will more than likely continue to do so for the length of the treatment course. If you are not experiencing nausea in the first 3 days of treatment, chances are that you will not be nauseated from the drug. If you feel ill from the medicine and you are not willing to finish the full course, please call your MD and ask for another drug to treat your sinus infection. It's not uncommon for patients to have nausea with Bactrim and they will probably change drugs for you if you ask. Hope you feel better! :)

i drank once when i was on bactrim for a staph infection. that was a really bad idea. i got really really sick. otherwise, it's o.k. as long as i eat with it.

DD just finished taking this a couple weeks ago. She did fine and didn't say it made her feel bad.

If you take it with food you probably won't have any trouble. Food, pill, more food on top. There is one that makes me throw up horribly unless I take it with a fair amount of food. Then, no problem at all.

Ms Marigny...you and me both! :sad2:

I had taken Bactrim once for a UTI with no problems, then about a year later was given it again for another UTI (since it worked fine the first time). OMG! The rash was awful! It was right before Christmas break and I looked like a lobster who'd been out in the sun too long and my lymph glands in the neck were so swollen! I was in college, so I went to student health services. Honestly, they had no clue...thought I had measles or mono and tested for both, which I didn't have. I went home and my mom (former nurse) was really concerned so she looked in her PDR (Physician's Desk Reference) and found that a severe reaction to the medication (sulfa based) could cause what I was going on with me and told me to stop taking it. I did and within 36 hours the rash was gone and the glands were not as swollen. Since then I've listed sulfa as a drug allergy.

Strange thing... :rolleyes1
After DS was born, when he was about 18 months old he had a bad sinus/ear infection and the doctor prescribed some medication, sulfa based. I asked the doctor if there was any chance of him being allergic to sulfa since I was. The doc said "highly unlikely", so I gave DS the medication. Well, after a few days of taking it, DS broke out in a rash, but his was spotty while mine years ago had been a solid red rash covering my entire body. I didn't make a connection because of this, so I called his pediatrician, who said to bring him in through the back door...thought he had measles or chicken pox since he'd not been fully immunized against those. Come to find out, yep! DS is highly allergic to sulfa medications also.

So, word to the wise...just monitor what is happening with you while on the medication and don't hesitate to call your doctor or pharmacist about any concerns.

Call your doctor and get them to switch you to something else. I'm allergic to Bactrim myself, and there are other drugs they can give you.

I take Bactrim for UTIs (which I get often), and fortunately it doesn't bother me at all. However, the dentist gave me some penicillin drug for an abscessed tooth (Pen V-K?) and it tore my stomach up. I felt so sick! Just told her, and she switched me. There's so much stuff out there, just tell the doctor if you react.

Bactrim made me feel a lot worse when I took it years ago so I don't get that antibiotic anymore.

Any antibiotic, period, has the possible side effect of nausea/upset stomach. Bactrim is a sulfa drug, and a lot of people are more sensitive to them.

FWIW, I'm allergic to Bactrim, but Cipro is the worst offender for me. It makes me sick as a dog, but I know it's curing my UTI, so I tough it out.
