Has anyone tried using a balloon...

We were there in Feb. and I was very concerned about the temperature. We didn't have a problem, I'm a light sleeper and every time I rolled over I'd wave my arms lol !!! I think the doors to the balconey are wired to and turn off the air or heat when opened.

The thermostat senses body heat but after time ( Several hours ) if there is no movement, like when people are sleeping it goes in to the set back mode to a Higher preset temperature setting.

But as long as the hand/mitten warmer tricks the thermostat into thinking the temperature in the room is above that "preset temperature", then my approach will work without trying to trick the motion sensors.

and motion. If your going to try the big mylar balloons,you'll need to stop at Walmart & pick up a cheap hampster. Tie the balloon string around a rear foot,let the little sucker squirm around all nite while it floats around the room and you sleep at a comfortable temp. If that don't work, try a guinne pig and two balloons.

Not on the ones i have seen installed in NYC. If you stand still for one hour ( or the programmed time) which most people do not the sensor ignores your body temperature and goes into set back mode. Again this is on the ones i have seen on the job and at trade shows.

But if the hand warmer is taped to the thermostat so that the thermostat thinks the room is 100 degrees (the temperature of the hand warmer), the AC will kick on and stay on. (This assumes that the pre-set temperature to maintain when no one is in the room is lower than 100 degrees which I'm sure it is since it is less efficient to cool a very warm room than it is to keep a room only a little cool.)

I am not a happy camper right now. I leave for BCV in 16 days, and, from what I am reading here, I should try to change my ressies to BWV, where I can at least control the air conditioning. I have hot flashes, people, and I am not pleasant when I get hot, which occurs at temperatures above 70. It was 16 degrees this morning when I went to work AND I WORE A SLEEVELESS DRESS!!! I was comfortable, thank you, but I am not happy about a $12,000 investment and I can't even control the temperature of my room!! So, I am open to suggestions

..I have stayed in this type room before and I had no trouble whatsoever, and I like a COLD room. And believe it or not I know what hot flashes feel like . I've read all several threads that have dealt with this issue and my best advise is to relax,the system does work.

Cruelladeville... Don't panic too much. During our trip last October we didn't have any problems at all during the night. During the day if we were gone for awhile we would come back and the room was a bit stuffy, but within 5 minutes the room was back to normal. I will see you there in 16 days! (I can't beleive you wore a sleaveless dress to work this AM, I was freezing!)

Thanks Viking and Terry, for the words of wisdom, I am trying to stay calm, but with 16 days left, who can stay calm?!!! Terry, I will see you in 16 days (I'll be the one walking around with a fan and a tall cool one). That sleeveless dress was quite comfortable this morning, but at 11 pm I'm freezing--Mom never told me about this!

We stayed at the BCV last July right after it was opened. I was the only one in my family who had a problem with the AC. A few nights i woke up in the middle of the night it felt warm, i waved my arm in the air and the AC went on. I met with my Guide to add on points, but before i added on 300 points at BCV i had concerns about several mechanical issues. My guide had me talk to the head of enginering for BCV and he answered my Questions
of course he answered my questions and was well aware of the problems i brought up and told me the builder had a lot to fix yet.

These Thermostats save the hotel industry a ton of money in energy cost. Would i put one in my home, NO but i can also put up with it for a short time.

Hi everyone -

I have the opposite problem with BCV thermostats. I'm always COLD and really dislike air conditioning (until the outside temp hits 90). We spent 5 nights at BCV at the end of February and found it impossible to regulate the 1 bedroom to a comfortable temerature. At one point the heat even kicked in, then it got too stuffy. I felt like Goldilocks in the Three Bears - too hot; too cold; but no JUST RIGHT! Not pleasant. After reading all these posts, it makes one realize that we'd like to control the room thermostats ourselves, which apparently is NOT an option.

I do, however, love the idea of a hamster floating around the room on a Mickey balloon. Very funny!

The hamster will work; so will an elderly man. My Dad is up peeing all night. He mumbles "prostate" or "age" but I think Mom (an RN) actually blames it on one of his meds. In any case, he is up repeatedly and I believe he will be as effective as the hamster as he is mobile and he seems to have body heat. Thank goodness because my Mom likes it really cold. I have packed sweats to sleep in. So if you guys don't want the hamster along, bring your grandparents...

So has anyone identified a gadget that will work? Some type of heated element in motion that will keep the airconditioning on? Something that could fit in a suitcase?

I'm not sure the "hand/mitten warmer tricks the thermostat into thinking the temperature in the room is above that "preset temperature", then my approach will work without trying to trick the motion sensors" will actually work, my understanding is that without motion, the room temperature is irrelevant. Seems like the hand/mitten warmer needs to move. That might be the gadget. A hand/mitten warmer in motion.

.what about one of them thingys you see in candle shops. You lite the candle and the rising heat spins some light weight wooden sculpture. Just a thought.

I say we all just get a bunch of potatoes- bake them in the oven so they get nice and hot. Then wrap them in a towel and put them on the night stand next to us. When we get too hot, all we have to do is take one out of the towel and THROW it at the thermostat. I wonder if that would work?!?!?!
Really- if someone can find a solution, please let me know- I get VERY WARM at night! Menopause- such a GLORIOUS thing!!!! I may have to bring a fan with me just so I can be comfortable at night. Or, I guess we could always start a "fan share" like the stroller share...... anyone willing to take that on??

I believe if you move your arms at night you'll activate the sensor, the potatoe part isn't needed. I believe the trick is a warm moving object that you could put close to the sensor to activate it. The candle and moving element is a nice idea, but it won't work for us, we wouldn't want a candle burning all night with young kids. I'm thinking more along the lines of a small moving gadget that is warm enough to activate the senor so it cools the room to the pre-set temperature, instead of reverting to money saving off mode. Perhaps there's a kids battery toy that would work and not be noisy?

How does one fool a motion detector?

I'd be will to bet most efforts employed to fool a motion detector were attempted to achieve the exact opposite of what we are trying to do; prevent it from going off for the purpose of theft.

Since it appears this type t/stat is the future for all resorts, and not just WDW, seems that some clever inventor would have a gold mine if he/she came up with a portable,economical, lightweight, moving heat source.

Baked potatoes are portable, economical and a moving heat source when thrown!!! They're not lightweight..... but, perhaps if you put a pan under the thermostat to gather the mashed potatoe, you could use it the next morning for hash browns!
