We go meatless on Wednesdays during Lent and I am thinking about pirogies for dinner tonight.

I saw that Aldi's has their own brand of these. Has anyone ever tried them? We usually get Mrs. T's, but I thought that I would give these a try if anyone can give me any positive feedback on them.

TIA! :)

They switched over from Mrs. T's a few moths ago. I served them last night they taste exactly like Mrs. T's. No one in my house notices any difference.

Thanks! I have to run out to buy some onions and will buy these as well! :thumbsup2

I tried both the cheese and the onion ones and liked them both very much!

Beth, I have to laugh cause I only opened this email to see where you are from, most people here where I live dont even know what pirogies are unless they are "replants" (yankees gone south)

I cant answer your question, sorry, my gramma makes them homemade for the family. But I do want to add that I bet alot of the churches in the area make them, you might want to check around. I know quite a few of the churches in Beaver County do (mostly Catholic I think). That might be a way better bet than the grocery frozen ones + the churches use the pirogie sales as sort of a fundraiser.

Anyone want to try to explain what a pirogie is? Would it be similiar to the 'pasties' my dh talks about from his childhood? (that's a short a sound - not long! ;) ) He says they are like pop-overs filled with meat, potatoes, veggies...

We go meatless on Fridays here during Lent.

A pasty is larger than a hot pocket and is made from pie crust type dough with meat, potatoes, etc. inside. I grew up in Northeastern Wisconsin and they were big there and in the UP of Michigan.

A pierogie is a small dumpling with filling. They are filled with meat or potato & cheese, sauerkraut, etc. Some are even filled with fruit. My Polish in-laws make these all the time. They are wonderful. I just started buying the frozen ones and my kids like those also. They are a great side-dish for us.

Thanks for the explanation, Anne. How did you know that dh's grandma lived in UP for awhile? ;)

I haven't tried them but I'm a HUGE Aldi fan.

About a year ago, I was listening to my favorite talk radio show. Somehow, they got a former big shot from Aldi to call in. He said that everything at Aldi is name brand just packaged with the Aldi name. I think he said that the chips are all Vitners, the pop Canfields, all of the chicken products are Tyson and I can't remember the rest.

The other great thing about Aldi is that their prices are the same no matter which store you go to. The one in WI is the same as the one in my neighborhood.

Also, all Aldi stores will be open on Sundays starting in April!

That is the best news I've heard since they started work towards opening a new Aldi in the plaza near where I live. I am so excited that i will be able to run in and grab milk when I run out and not have to pay reg. grocery store prices or drive seventeen miles.

Just finished cleaning up from dinner - which was ALDI's Potato/Cheese pirogies and salad. I was VERY happy with them - DH and I both thought that the dough was a little thinner than Mrs. T's which is a good thing. :) So these will be another thing that I buy regularly at Aldis! :)

cinamin - We used to belong to a church that makes pirogies (or pirohi as they would spell it.) :) And there are a number of churches in the area where we could get them. They make the BEST ones at my in-law's church. The ones that are homemade or are from churches are definately better than Mrs. T's (or Aldis.) But the problem is that they are now $6 plus a dozen. We usually have 3 dozen or so, so that we can have leftovers for Friday lunches. I just paid $1.49 a dozen at Aldis. :)

geety - we go meatless on Fridays too. We Eastern Catholics have "no meat" on both Wednesdays and Fridays of Lent. :)

daughtersrus - I am a HUGE Aldi's fan too! ::yes:: I buy most of my groceries there and just fill in at our regular grocery store. It just kills me to have to buy (and pay for) produce at the regular store when I can't get to Aldi's.

I seriously have not tried anything from Aldi that sucked.

The pierogies are really good as is their ravioli, taquitos and other frozen stuff. I usually make a big Aldi run about twice a month.

I loved Aldi. It's so nice not going into a big grocery store all the time inow.

I am so jealous our Aldi's doesn't have pirogies ! I'll have to ask I did notice it seemed like they were making room for another cooler. Our Aldi's are open Sunday's now in March but my sister's in PA started in February. You can't beat their milk prices.

I haven't seen these at Aldi's either but maybe I missed them :confused3 . What section are they in and what other things are near them so I can look next time?

I guess I am in the minority as I didn't think they are nearly as good as Mrs. T's

That is one thing I will have to continue to go to Giant Eagle for.

my family makes pierogi's every year - the saturday before xmas - and I am talking thousands. (my mom has 5 brothers and sisters plus their kids and now our babies) so there are a lot. but I like home made and home made only. so yummy, my share is eaten all the time the week after xmas - I can't help myself.

Calie, of course they are in the Frozen section. ;) Near the frozen pizza, etc. Yesterday they were on the second shelf from the bottom.

Hope that you are able to find them. If your Aldi's does not carry them, perhaps you could talk to the manager about carrying them.

Good Luck! :)

Tracy, I put homemade and church made in a category all by themselves. We do like the grocery store variety for "every day" though. ::yes::

Mrs. T's is our favorite. I find them on sale so often, is the Aldi price better than sales too? I may have to try them, at least once.

Awww... now I'm hungry! ::yes::
