Hello --

While we're in-between Disney vacations, we were thinking of going to Atlantis for a few days to celebrate our 10th anniversary

Has anyone on the boards been there before? If so, do you have any tips?

I've heard a lot about how expensive the food is. Is it better to buy a meal plan or eat meals off-site?

Thanks!

My DD just got back Saturday night and loved it. She said the resort was amazing but the food was outrageously expensive. They bought a bag of Doritos and was charges $10.00. A buffet dinner set them back $45.00 each. The more upscale restaurants were $180.00 for 2. After a few nights they ate outside the hotel. I don't know about the meal plans. Hope this helps some.

DH and I went in 2000. We had the BEST trip there! Food is VERY expensive, but eating off-site would require a cab ride. If we go again, I'm going to pack shelf-stable foods and drinks so we can eat at least some of our meals on the cheap.

There are meal plans, but they seemed expensive also. If you want to eat all of your meals there, maybe a meal plan would be cost-effective though.

Honestly, the food costs are the reason that I have not pushed to go back to Atlantis. I'd love to go again someday, but we'd definitely have to figure out what foods we could pack in a suitcase to tide us over between outrageously expensive meals :rotfl:

For those of us who would like the use of all the facilities at Atlantis but do not want to pay the high price tag, consider staying across the street at Comfort Suites. It's a lot less money for a lot more room and you can use everything, including the pool area and beach at Atlantis. I was in Nassau for a day and we had lunch on the pool deck at the Sheraton, right next door. Very reasonable and affordable. ($10 for cheeseburger, fries, diet coke). Also you don't need a cab to go elsewhere for a meal. There is a water taxi that will take you off of Paradise Island to downtown Nassau where there are tons of affordable restaurants. I think the fare is about $3.00 each way.

Thanks for the tips! Is there an extra charge if you're staying offsite and you want to use Atlantis' waterslides or other attractions?

You can't get access to the pools/waterslides unless you are a guest of the Atlantis or Comfort Suites.

You can buy a pass to The Dig Site. Anyone can visit the casino for free.

Question on Comfort Suites...how big are they? Come with a frig and a microwave at all?

Also, no grocery stores or anything around to pick up snacky things?

My family went their Feb. 2000. We all liked it, very nice resort. Yes, the food is expensive. Even eating at the pool or just getting a soda was very expensive. I found the food to be good, but I did find the pricing to be a bit too high. They do have a dress code for many of the restaurants. So be careful in what you pack. We went to eat at this one place, can't remeber the name, it kinda is situated in the lobby with a big aquarium, and it stated no shorts, jeans, etc. My friend had on dress shorts, kinda like a skort and they would not let her in, yet a man was sitting there with jeans on. So just be careful, because if there is a certain place that you would like to dine and they have a dress code, they seem to enforce it, well with some people anyway. Most people seem to gather around the slide area, which makes sense, so I would suggest getting out there early to get a chair. The area does get crowded.

If you choose the comfort suites MAKE SURE you tell them you want to be in the NEWER RENOVATED section. The older section is nasty!

As a CS guest you have rightful access to ALL the same ameneties that Atlantis guest have...........for A LOT less money!

Book thru smarterliving.com they have great discounts for choice hotels.

Yes, DH and I stayed there in November. It was lovely. I'm going to go against the grain and say don't settle for the COmfort Suites stay right at the Atlantis. It's so nice and to me it's like when you go to Disney you don't want to stay off site. THe restaurants are great and so is the Casion. One warning - the shops are VERY EXPENSIVE! Have a wonderful time.
