I think it depends on whether people understand the program or not. I was traveling by myself, as I was working as a tour escort for a group. So I found members of the group to share mine with, but of course that was easier since we already had a "connection".
I definitely think it's worth a try. As you said, pick a family who you have a few minutes to chat with on the bus or in the crowd before RD. If they look at you as if you have two heads, try another! (And feel a little sorry for them for the great deal they missed out on!).
There have to be people who have read about the program and at least have an inkling what's going on. Not worth spending a lot of time trying to convince anyone, but a nice thing to do nonetheless.
