My DS wants to see it so I looked it up on screenit.com and it looks way beyond what I am comfortable with.

I am not a prude, but I do monitor what my kids see and yes, they see a lot less than other kids that are the same age, but that is how I am raising them.I do know that he is getting older, but still....it sounded over the top for me.

Not the movie, but I've seen the musical. Depending on the age (and level of maturity) of your DS, I would probably say most likely it won't be appropriate for him, especially if he's under 13 or so.

One of my favorite websites is www.screenit.com. They tell you exactly what is in the movie and what parts may require parents consideration. It's an objective look that tells you what is in the movie and you can decide what is or is not OK form your kids.
Here is a link to their review of Rent. Just click on 'movies.' Hope this helps.

My 12 year old DD saw it with me. But we had a long talk before, and after, the movie about what she was likely to see and what she thought about it.
We allowed her to go with supervision based on her response to the talk. She loves theater and really wanted to see it. In our case, she handled the subject matter really well.

I checked out scrrenit before, and was looking for actual viewers opinions.
Your 12 yr.old saw it? So you didn't think the lesbian @ss-grabbing, stripping and m@sturbation stuff wasn't over the top for her? Or all the drug use? Because what I got from screenit sounded pretty in-your-face. If it's not that bad, I guess I'd like someone to tell me.

Have seen the musical, and going this weekend to see the movie and I would not recommend it for anyone under 16 imho. And even that depends on the maturity. It's a wonderful story, but not appropriate for kids.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I have seen a live production and I have an almost 10 year old who is pretty mature for her age and I know that I wouldn't consider letter her see it until she was close to high school age. Its not that I'm naive enough to think she won't face some of the things portrayed in the movie, but we are from the midwest and those things are just not as in your face here as they are portrayed in Rent. That's just my opinion, I think we all have to make decisions based on our own children.

My 15 year old son saw it a coupleof weeks ago. He's a serious musician and knows where this musical came from. His response to me was:

1) Puccini did a better job 120 years ago at telling this story
2) When some of his friends asked him if he wanted to see it again he told me that once was enough for him for so-so music, drag queens and drugs.

There are probably better routes to an uplifting story.

ETA - But at least it's not Andrew Loud Webber.

I am 27 and I was embarassed watching several parts of it with my Mom when we went to go see it at the movies.

I'm very surprised this got a PG-13 rating. It's definitely not a movie I would recommend to anyone under 16

My 16 year old DD saw it on opening day and loved it, but she's in theater here in NY and pretty mature. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone younger, unless the parents feel the kid is old enough to understand it. My dd is actually downstairs now belting out "Take me as I am" from the film (Indina Menzel is her idol)

My 13 yr old loved it, understood it, and I generaly felt it was age-appropriate for her.
