Hi

I was wondering has anyone rented a DVC from someone and need to reserve a special need? If so how do you go about doing this?

We are members, so we have not rented from another member. I can explain how it works for members though so you can tell the member what to expect.

You need to figure out what you need - do you need a fully wheelchair accessible room with a roll in shower, or just a room with grab bars in the bathroom. There is more information in the disABILITIES FAQs thread about the different types of room (including some pictures). There are also rooms that have features for people with hearing disabilities. A link to the disABILITIES FAQs thread is in my signature.
Once you know what you need to reserve, it's important to make sure that the person you are renting points from understands what you need. The member needs to make the actual reservation.
For the rooms with roll in showers or grab bars, the CM taking the reservation will contact Special Needs reservation to make sure that there is actually a room with those features available for the time period you want. If there is, that room will be blocked for your reservation. They won't tell you which room it is until you check in, but it should be blocked off for you.
The confirmation sheet for your reservation should say something like "Fully accessible villa confirmed" (or whatever the needs were), although our last DVC reservation did not.

My mother and I rented an OKW studio last September. I use a wheelchair for distances, but can walk around the room OK, and don't need any special mods in the bathroom. However, as OKW doesn't have elevators in every building, we had to request a ground floor studio. I just asked the person we were renting from to request "ground floor for medical reasons", and we were all set. I checked it was on the reservation letter, and a few days before we left, phoned to confirm (if you are renting from a member, you can only phone up about about four or five days in advance of your trip), but it was all relatively stress free. We rented from an absolutely wonderful person here on the Dis, who made the whole process easy and painless.

It will probably make it easiest on the person you're renting from, if you write out the exact wording you would like them to use, and put it in quotation marks. That way, they can just read from a script, and there's less stress for all :goodvibes

Hope you have as good an experience as we did! :thumbsup2

We have rented DVC points a few times from different members and different properties and never had a problem. We just make absolutely sure that the member requests an accessible room, which they are probably not used to doing.

Be warned, staying at DVC properties can be addictive as we are now DVC members.
