Has anyone rented a car on St. Thomas?

Okay...so here's what I'm thinking, if it's going to cost us $56 roundtrip for a taxi to and from Coral World/Coki, isn't just better to rent a car??

Has anyone done this? Looking at the DCL shopping guides, they say Budget is right there and has maps of the island.

We rented from Budget feb/03. Budget is at the other end of Havensight Mall, it is a little bit of a walk, but not bad, once you find out where it is.

I liked renting a car becuase I could put a car seat in it for my then 4DS. I felt much safer with my husband driving than a taxi driver. We also stopped at a grocery store and bought drinks and chips etc. It was kind of neat stopping at a grocery store where the locals shop.

Hey..a grocery run! I didn't even think of that! LOL! Did Budget tell you exactly where they were located? I can check a St. Thomas map and see if their listed.

I didn't speak to anyone directly in St. Thomas when I rented, I think I used the Budget 800 number, so I didn't get exact directions.

My DH and I were in St. Thomas this past Feb and they were still in the same spot, although we didn't use them this time, we went to St. John's for the day instead.

To get to Budget, walk through Havensiight mall to the other end, and Budget is in a small building on the other side of the street. There are plenty of security people at the docks who can point you in the right direction, and there was a sign along the docks with an arrow pointing the way. It was a bit of a walk with 3 kids, all our swim and beach gear and a booster seat, but we made it pretty easily, so I wouldn't worry.

I've been wondering the same thing. Is $56 r/t for a family of 4? We are a group of 6. Does anyone know how much that would be?

From what I've read it's $7 per person one way. That's $42 for you guys one way...$84 r/t.

We also rented a car in St. Thomas, we drove all over the Island, it was very nice to do our own tour. They drive on the left, but their cars have the driver on the left like we do. DH drove, it was freaky sometimes when he made a turn!

We also rented from Budget and drove to Coki. The open air jeep was a big hit with the boys. Budget gave us a great map of the island. We drove back to the ship the "long" way around the island, and it was just awesome coming around the corner and looking down on the bay with the Magic. You are very high up so it would be like the view from the Tram ride without having to pay! I was in the passenger seat facing traffic which was a bit unnerving at first, but all part of the adventure!

I know that initially they talk about St Maarten but they mention St Thomas also.

We've rented from Budget 3 times in St Thomas and never had a problem. Just a short walk from the Magic.

Driving on the left hand side of the road isn't a big deal, excpet when making turns.
