I got my DS10 one of those kits with a habitat and you send away for tadpoles to grow into frogs. We have had the tadpoles for about 4 or 5 weeks not and not a sign of a leg. Has anyone else done this? How long did it take for your little ones to grow up?

Put a light on it. We sent away for one of the habitats too and they never grew. I did a search online and found that they need heat to change. I bought a cheap lamp (think Pixar lamp) and put it on them and they started changing in days. I turned it on during the day and off at night.

We never did the kit but I bought a tadpole for our pond last summer. The kids named him Tad. It seemed to take forever for the thing to grow legs but he eventually did. After about three months he was an honest to goodness frog. They renamed him Froggy. He managed to survive the winter and we saw him for the first time a couple of days ago. He is now Prince Naveen. Give him time.

I agree with Pembo. Tadpoles need warm water to change into frogs. I worked for a pet wholesaler and we dealt with all types of fish, etc. The tadpoles were kept in the cold room, with all the goldfish. The water was next to freezing temp when touched with the hand. Just imagine sticking your hand in the river while it is snowing outside. It did slow down change drastically. Once it gets warm, the tadpoles will quickly develop legs. And on the advice of Pembo, give them light, then darkness. All animals need this. Just part of nature.

Thanks for the info. I lost this thread and had to go search for it. The tadpoles are in their habitat in the kitchen which is around 76 degrees now. When we got them it may have been a little cooler. The lights are on most of the day, and off at night. I guess I will try a small lamp to put near them to see if that helps.

Can't wait to see them start sprouting legs!

DD's Pre-K class is "growing" tadpole right now. I've been surprised how long it's taking. It seems like they've had them forever, and they barely have little legs.

Evolution is tough business! :)
