I'm just curious if anyone has ever had to pay a room recovery fee either for themselves or for a renter. I get the feeling that major damage to a room is relatively rare but the possibility of someone smoking in the room or bringing along a pet is much higher.

My 3rd cousin, 4 times removed, was talking with someone they met at a concert, who knew someone who'd been to disney...well....that person said they talked with someone waiting in line to get into the MK one day and they HAD heard of someone else who knew someone who had!

Scout's honor!

;)

:rotfl2: Love it! On a serious note, that's what I suspect. Disney has the policy to charge for it but unless it's blatantly obvious it's not done.

At this point, I'd be really surprised if they have actually charged someone for any "blatant" wear and tear! I think the stipulation is in the rules for the off chance that Charlie Sheen gets caught red handed thrashing his DVC room while partying with the Godesses!

Unless Disney blatantly catches someone in the act of defacing property, I don't think anyone is ever charged!

I am sure it has happened at least once before but who is going to volunteer the information.

We had a pack and play missing from our 2 bedroom at VB.

DH noticed someone carrying out a pack and play from the beach club yesterday. Can anyone give a reason why someone would be bringing their own pack and play? If you needed a second one, would housekeeping give you one?

Do you think they often disappear from villas?

I would agree with your comments above.

As "owners" it may be frustrating to find a scratched end table or broken closet door when entering a room, but realistically it's MUCH more expensive for Disney to try and monitor such damage, bill the responsible party and collect the fees than it is to simply repair/replace and move on.

Now, if you're asking as an owners who is considering renting out some points, a far greater concern would be the non-member who leaves some sort of tab on their account upon departure. Usually it seems tied to a credit card which is either declined or fraudulent. Those fees eventually trickle back to the owner. Seems like there's a post about that happening every 6 months or so--hard telling how many other instances don't make it to the DIS.

The pack and plays can be very unsanitary. So alot of people bring their own. Just saying. No flames please!

My sister brought her own - she couldn't be sure how clean Disney's were, and she felt safer with her baby sleeping in her own pack and play.

I agree that skipping out on credit card charges does seem to occur more often. But based on DIS posts it looks like in a lot of cases the renter eventually pays the bill. As an owner, having to deal with the whole "collection" thing is a hassle but from what I can tell few owners (at least on the disboards) have to pay someone else's charges. Maybe that points to the quality of renters found on this board.

It would be hard to prove that the last occupants scratched a table or broke a door. They could just say it was that way upon arrival and they didn't think it was worth reporting. It would have to be so bad that no one could have accidentally overlooked it and expensive enough for them to think it was worth pursuing.

It wouldn't be a stretch to think that it has happened at least a few times.

In any event we report anything major we see just in case. I am not going to count the plates but if I open a cabinet and see the TV is busted I am going to let someone know even if I had no plans to use that TV.

Not DVC and I doubt they do or we would have heard a horror story by now and I don't think we have.

But I used to run a convention at a hotel, and they DID charge for damages - not the "bump that causes a scratch in the table" sorts of damages - but the "you had a wild party in here all weekend, its VERY obvious, and now the carpet needs to be cleaned, the mattress fumigated, and the bathroom will take an hour or two alone - plus its really gross." That sort of thing wouldn't be hard for Disney to charge for (if they so desired), but I also don't think it happens too often at Disney.

Ok thanks for the information about the pack and plays. We have always found the one in the villa to be clean.

It happens but yes the damage is usually extreme. More than scratches, broken dish etc.

As to smoking that happens when a guest is caught or reported and they recieve a warning that they choose to ignore.

Actually it is funny that you brought this up. While staying at SSR a group of teens staying in one of the rooms came back from DTD drunk and decided to do a little vandalism. They trashed the room they were in, and also trashed they area outside in the hallways, taking trash and throwing it over the 2nd story (pizza boxes, dirty diapers, dirty towels,etc...) and then drove their car into a tree. The teens were arrested, their parents, who WERE DVC members had to pay the recovery fee and damages to the facilities, and they also had their membership revoked!

That is awesome! :lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl2:

Edit: Oh, Bobbi, we used our Pack n Play at SSR. My family lives in Clearwater, so we usually visit them then the mouse. It just seemed easier to use ours, since we were familiar with it and had it with us anyway (maybe more psychological for dragging it on the plane. BTW, we used a Navy seabag to transport it).

They had there DVC membership revoked? They can do that?

Yea. I find that interesting too. I'm not defending what went on at all and I can certainly appreciate the fact that the members can be held financially responsible, but revoke their membership? Really?

I admit I'm not an expert when it comes to the POS but I'm going to find mine and read it more closely. I find it extremely hard to believe that they could have their memberships revoked at all, even for this. It's a deeded (granted, expiring) property. That's ownership from the perspective of a court of law. You can't take my house because you don't like how my teenagers behave.

They could consider it more like a condominium where you damage the joint property or diminish the value of the total property, then they come after you with big fees. Especially where one member doesn't own one entire villa.
