come off and switched to another med after being on Paxil for a long time?

10 years ago after J.C. was born I started having awful Anxiety Attacks and my Dr. put me on Paxil. At the time they said there were no "side effects" but now, 10 years later there have been some found and the main one is weight gain. It has been virtually impossible for me to lose weight even with diet and excersise. There are also severe withdrawels when coming off Paxil. I am going to call my Dr. on Monday and see about switching to something else from Paxil and hoping that the withdrawels will be less if I do that. I have heard wonderful things about Zoloft. Anyway with as many members as we have here I thought I would give it a shot and see if anyone else is on Paxil and get their thoughts on this.

My DD is on Zoloft and it has been great for her. She has never taken Paxil, but did try several other meds before we found Zoloft. I think your best course of action would be to ask your doctor's advice. I know it is really dangerous to try to come off any of the SSRI's without stepping down gradually--your doc could help you with that and advise you on a new med to take its place.

Good luck in finding a new med and keep us posted on your progress!

I am going through the EXACT SAME THING!! I found out yesterday at the doctors that the paxil is most likely the reason I have gained weight and cannot lose it! I swear I could live on skim milk and carrots and gain weight!!!! So now he is weaning me off of it. Im going from 20 mg to 15 mg for a couple weeks, then down to 10, then 5, then 5 every other day - something like that. Takes about 6 wks to do it properly! OMG I cant believe it is the paxil that has made me gain so much weight. I hate the stares and stuff I get that make me feel like people must think I live at McDonalds and Krispy Kreme! That infuriates me! Watch out this summer!! I might actually go out in public in a swimsuit!

I was on Zoloft for a few months and there were hardly any problems

I found Wellbutrin is better about not causing weight gain than Paxil or Zoloft. Zoloft also has some side effects that just wouldn't work for me. My best friend prefers Zoloft, but because of some side effects, she is trying Wellbutrin.

My sister is taking Wellbutrin because her doctor said this it is most likely not to have her have problems losing weight.

With all that said, Zoloft worked better for me and my best friend, but because of some unwelcome side effects, she is on Wellbutrin and I am suppose to be :)

Feel free to PM me if you want to know about some of the side effects of Zoloft on me

No, but my mom was on Zoloft. It made her gain about 40 pounds in a few months. That's one reason why she stopped taking it. My nephew takes it (he's 11), and it just makes him VERY sleepy.
