Has anyone here been in a walking boot?

I broke my foot 6 weeks ago, had surgery on it, and am getting this hard cast off June 16th. Our trip is a week later and I will be in a walking boot. I just don't know if we should go. Will I be able to take it off to swim? Will it be too hot to wear? I will probably get an ECV part of the time, but I am having a hard time imagining what the trip will be like. Should I postpone it to Dec. ?
I would appreciate anyone's thoughts. My kids know we may not go. We already have airfare that we got with vouchers and ff miles. Sorry to ramble on, I don't know what to do.

I was in one awhile back. It was in July, in Kansas, and it was blazing hot to wear. Not hard to walk in, but by the end of the day my ankle was pretty sore from being on it. I wasnt able to take it off to swim, I could only have mine off at night and then I had to wear a wrap on it.

I would call your surgeon ASAP and just ask what his opinion is.

I don't see any problem with going in a walking boot but make sure the shoe on the other foot has a sole of the same thickness. When I had mine, my hips and back would go out if I didn't wear a shoe with the same sole thickness.

Thank you for the advise.
Kristina- I never thought about the soles! I guess I better check my sandal's height. I suppose a sneaker would be better, but it's so hot.

I am currently in one! They are hot and heavy. If you have the option I would postpone. I hate to even mention that .... I know that might be a difficult decision. I had elective foot surgery in April -- we pushed our trip that was planned for the end of May to March becuse of the hassle the boot would cause. Stairs, inclines, standing in long lines will be burdonsome as the boot offer no flexiability. It is hard to sit on the ground and get up and even kneal.

Like the OP said you might want to find some shoes that match the height of the boot -- I have had sore hips if I wore the wrong shoe. Some sort of platform sandal would work -- I reccommed Dansko brand ...yes they are expensive but worth every penny and are actually good walking shoes which you will need and want for your recovery once you are out of the boot!!!

If you do go....get a EVC!!! you will not regret it! :goodvibes

Carter'smommy-Can you tell me how high your boot is? Mine will be just above the ankle. The foot bone I broke is on the top of my foot. Is yours up to your knee or beyond? If it is, I can see why you have so much trouble, my mother in law was in one and it was very hard for her. If is just the small one like I will have, it sounds like it's going to be bad.
Right now we will be able to cancel 72 hours before if we need to. I'm not sure I want to go. We have airline tickets that we didn't pay much for since we used ff miles and vouchers. If the weather were cooler, I'd be more inclined to go.

My cast is called an AirCast and is up to my knee. I get to take it off at night but must wear it during the day, even if I am just sitting around the house. I also wear another boot(shoe) for driving.

I did not actually break my foot myself ... my Dr. did it for me!!! :scared1:
I had a bunionectomy, which requires breaking a bone on April 14th and will be finally out of the cast next Tuesday.

Happy Healing!!! :flower3:

For the sake of your hips and back, a scooter will be a must. No matter how good a height match you find, your stride will never be quite normal and it is too much to put in long days on your feet. Scooters don't break the bank, but they are far from free! Then there is the heat. The boots are hot!!!! I did a business trip in one a few years ago, and it was bearable, but truthfully, if it was my WDW trip and delaying it was an option, I'd be picking a later date. Good luck, heal well, and have a marvelous time whenever you go.
