metal containers in their carryon bags??? I just started packing and thought I was doing great until dh started snooping! He thought that it was a bad idea to put aerosol containers in my carryon bag...that I would be sounding off all the alarms! I have deoderant and wrinkle releaser, mousse for my hair, and so on in there. Has anyone had problems with this or should I have them checked instead???

Wondering the same thing. Also for those tiny nail clippers to cut off the cable ties!!!

Well, I am sure that the Magic has scissors in case they take my nail clippers!!!!

The nail clippers if detected will be taken away, so if you can I would check them. If you feel you need them as a carry-on item, you should take 2 with you, check one and carry on one, so if they confiscate one you won't be nail clipperless.

If you go to any needlework shop they sell an item called 'Clover Thread Cutter Pendant' I wear this when ever we travel...it has a blade inside that CANNOT be removed....Works great...

Just looked...Joann.com has them on sale !!!$5.99

The nail clippers are a definitely a no no. My sister-in-law was asked at the check in if she had any items like that in her carry on. She did so the made her put them in her checked luggage.

You CAN carry on a nail clipper, as long as it doesn't have the metal file attached.

Aroesal cans can also be carried on, as long as they are under "x" ounces (normal toiletries are) and contain typical personal grooming aids. You can't carry on such items as spray paint and noxious substances (like mace).

I've flown seven or eight times since September 11, and have carried all of these items on, and have not had anything taken away.

We take a pair of needle nosed pliers with a built in wire cutter and put them in the front, unlocked pocket of our checked bag for the cable ties.

Lots of people put nail clippers in the outside pocket of their suitcases for the cable ties. I don't know how many travel with pliers! :)

I'd pack all that personal care stuff in my suitcase anyway. Why bother carrying it on the plane? Even if your suitcase was lost, it shouldn't be that difficult to replace those items. It's so much easier with a small carry on!

Hey Gillian--

I pack about half of the personal care items in my checked bag--but carry on the "essentials" and harder to replace items. (My hair creme is very difficult to find, and makeup would not only be hard to replace, but expensive as well--probably $300 to replace my makeup alone!). That an a change of underwear and spare shirt, and I'm good to go. It all fits into a small tote along with the camera, a paperback, small jewelry case, wallet, passport, and prescription medicines. Sometimes I can even get my laptop into the same bag!

Amme

Anne, I know you travel a lot and must have the packing down to a science! I wasn't sure about the OP. Unless you've been through an airport lately, you just don't realize how much of a pain it is to have more than one bag!

I also carry on my make up & things that are hard to find. But stuff like spray deoderant can probably be replaced. :)

I got so annoyed on our last flight because my mom & I both had small carry ons with (well wrapped) tea sets in them. She had a purse at her feet & I had a small bag for me & DS. We put the tea set bags in the overhead, leaving room for a few other people. At least 5 people insisted on trying to shove their giant bags in there!! I lost track of the number of times I had to get up and "help" them so that our tea pots would be safe. Those big rolling carry ons are the worst!

Gillian--I know what you mean. My biggest pet peeve are people who get on first, have seats in the back, but throw their suitcase in a front overhead. IMHO this is a "red flag", someone who doesn't want their bag near them--and should be treated as such by the airlines!

We do bring the roll-on's when we are in first class where there is a lot more overhead space, or sometimes I'll pack one roll on for all three of us, and then DH and I share a small tote and DS has his school backpack with a book and a pair of sunglasses (in other words, it's virtually empty). But IMHO thats not "too much" and we aren't incoveniencing others.

We just returned.
They did not take away our nail clippers (no file attached). I had an aromatheraphy candle in a tin, they did not take it. We put our film and cameras in a FILM SAFE, that was fine.

Immediately after 9/11/01, nail clippers with nail files attached were prohibited from aircraft cabins.

But for a long time now "nail clippers with nail files attached" have been classified under "Items permitted in aircraft cabins." See http://www.dot.gov/affairs/tsa0702.htm

But not everyone is aware of the change . A skycap at Chicago O'Hare specifically asked if any of us had nail clippers in our carry-ons. I said yes, and explained that this was allowed. He disagreed and strongly suggested that I put them in my checked bag. Rather than than having an arguement, I put the nail clippers in an outside pocket of my checked bag.

I'm glad I did not put the nail clippers in the main compartment of my checked bag. The TSA put a cable tie on the main zippers, but not on the outside pockets. So I still had access to the nail clippers; otherwise I could not have opened the bag until I found a Walgreen's store!

A more complete list is at http://www.tsa.gov/public/display?theme=12&content=13 (What's strange is that the dot.gov link indicates that cork screws are prohibited from carry-ons, but the tsa.gov list says they're allowed.)

Being paranoid about "viruses" (and oders), I packed a full size can of Lysol in my carry on and did not have anyone open my bag coming or going!

I just returned and had a nail clippers in my pocket with a file on it. I put in the plastic bin that goes through the x-ray and not one word was said about it.

Nah, my containers usually behave pretty well. BUT I do keep an eye on my son's containers - they are age appropriate and tend to act immaturely at times...

Ummm...I have a lot of smart alec responses to this, but most would probably have the Homeland Security folks at my door this morning, so I think I'll be quiet :)
