Has anyone had a successful root canal through a crown?

So, my tooth has been hurting since Sunday afternoon, Yesterday afternoon it was obvious I had to be seen....

Well, I was seen by my dentist who put the crown on this particular tooth, and he immediately sent me over to an endodontist (specialist?) & she confirmed the root is dead & the next thing I need to do is get a root canal, that is after I take the antibiotics to get rid of the infection that formed where the root died (That's why I have a toothache)

Anyhow, she's not sure that the crown will survive through the root canal, she says there'sa chance that it will, but I've heard that they really don't too often....

Anyone with experience here? I have to wait ten days, so I'm on antibiotics & pain medication til next week & I'm nervous about this...

I had a root canal through a crown. I had already had a root canal on that same tooth about 15 years ago, but I wound up with an abcess and half of my face began to swell uncomfortably. They did the root canal through the crown but then they needed to do a new crown. It was terribly expensive, but I no longer have any trouble with that tooth.

How is it you had to have a root canal TWICE in the same tooth? I didn't know that was possible....

yep, me too...I had a root canal twice on the same tooth he drilled through the crown and performed it again. it was b/c the infection that wouldn't go away. it only took an hour - 1 1/2 hrs...it wasn't as bad as the initial root canal. good luck! no root canal, or any visit to the dentist is ever fun

I also had a root canal through a crown. After it was done, they just filled the tooth with a regular filling.

Yep, also had a root canal through a crown. That was about 2 years ago and I still have the crown with a filled hole in it.

Just wondering... How does the endodontist determine the root is "dead"?

To determine if a root is dead, I think they are supposed to place hot or cold against it and the one that doesn't hurt is dead.

I've had too root canals recently. One was through a crown, and the other was through a temporary crown (why the endodontist didnt' take it off is beyond me). But the one through the crown is still good 6 months later.

Are you sure the dentist gave you the actual crown and not a temporary? Typically, crowns take some time to make and they need to have an impression and be sent out. (I had a crappy dentist years ago and am still paying for it - I've had a lot of dental problems).

I would have rather had the second root canal today. However, the dr. said the root was even cracked so the whole tooth came out for me! Ewww. I hate sitting here with yucky gauze in my mouth. And, now I have to look forward to having an implant done down the road.
But, why would they do the root canal through the crown? Why not just pop it off, do the procedure and cement it back on? Odd....

Man, not my endodontist. He had a machine with electrical impulses. He made me hold it to my tooth. If the nerve "jumped", it wasn't dead. It hurt like you-know-what and I swore like you-know-what.

But, why would they do the root canal through the crown? Why not just pop it off, do the procedure and cement it back on? Odd....

Some crowns can't be popped off. I just had a root canal through a crown and I needed a new crown because I had decay under the crown. When I went in to the dentist with pain in the tooth, he tried to pop the crown off. There was no way that was coming off! I just had the crown replaced last week and it had to be cut off.

My sister had to have a root canal cone on a crowned tooth. She was afraid of what might happen, especially since it was kind of a pricy crown right in front. They just drilled a little hole in the back and refilled it, and you can't even tell. So hopefully it will work out for you too. Good luck!

Some crowns can't be popped off. I just had a root canal through a crown and I needed a new crown because I had decay under the crown. When I went in to the dentist with pain in the tooth, he tried to pop the crown off. There was no way that was coming off! I just had the crown replaced last week and it had to be cut off.

Now that's some GOOD cement! Especially since there was decay under it.

Yes, this is exactly what she did... she used cold next to the tooth in question and then the actual tooth & I felt NOTHING on that tooth, thus the root is dead....

I've had the crown for about 13 years I realized last night... she said crown's usually go 15 years or so, so I've realized this probably doesn't bode well for the crown

This is the same thing with my crown, it's a permanent crown, there is no taking it off, except in a million little bits....

On the plus side, this specialist actually costs less than my regular dentist (who I know is pricey).... but I'd be back to my dentist for the crown should it break, hope he has the old impression so he doesn't need to do it again if the crown doesn't survive....
