has anyone got a passport while owing back childsupport

Why can't that money be used to get caught up on his past due payments to support his child?. The vacation can wait.

Speaking from the other end of it, I am owed over that amount, I hope he cannot get his passport until he is fully paid up. My ffeling is that if he can afford to go on vacation, he can afford to pay off what he owes before he goes. he should pay off his debt before spending it on vacations. The amount of money you are going to spend on the DCL cruise could pay a big chunk of it off so it should only take a year or two of no big vacations to get it paid off and then you never have to worry about it again.

I never understand why people don't think it needs to be paid when due and complain about the after-effects when it could be getting paid off faster if they really wanted too.

DCL is very expensive and will easily cost you $2500 or more. If he owes $2500 why don't you use the money you would use to pay for the cruise to pay off the back child support and then start saving for your cruise rather than stretching it out 5 years? I am sure you could save faster than that and could take a cruise in a few years and you won't have to worry about the passport issue.

I would think the child support would be first priority, so why not take the cruise money and pay it all off? I can't see why anyone would want that hanging over their heads.

Did you leave off a zero perhaps?

It shouldn't take years to pay off $2500. Even we could scrape that up in a few months and we are always broke.

Sorry, you aren't going to get much sympathy here.

I don't think you should have NO vacations at all until the debt is paid, but I do think DCL is a bit extravagant. I'd spend $ getting caught up before going on a cruise.

Debt payments should always come before extravagant spending, in my opinion. I'm sure you could take a fun and affordable vacation closer to home and still put extra money toward the debt owed.

I'd agree if we were talking about credit card debt or loans. Child support is a completely different issue as far as I'm concerened.

Frankly I'd like to see anyone who CAN pay their child support and CHOOSES not to (because they'd rather take a vacation, drive an expensive car, etc.) tossed in JAIL!

If you create a life, you are RESPONSIBLE for that life--that means not only supporting them financially, but also being a parent. And if you marry someone with kids from a previous relationship, you are marrying a package.

Some people are so selfish.

Merry Freaking Christmas.

So CC debt comes before child support debt to you. I hope you never get divorced and are on the non-receiving end of this. You'd change your mind really fast.

DH's most favorite arrest to make is those who owe child support. Not only do they get arrested they get a whole speech up the jail. I think it is sickening to go on vacation knowing that there is outstanding child support to be paid.

I think she meant that she could see going on vacation if you had debt OTHER than child support.

I think you mixed it up. DcGrumpy was saying that she doesn't agree with vacations WHILE child support is owed.

And I'm sorry, but I think if you have an extra $40 to stay at an Econo lodge two towns over as your next vacation - nope, the $40 needs to go to the child that it is owed to. What you are doing is nothing less than STEALING from a child to go on a cruise. It's disgusting.

I hope so.
Why don't you re-read what I wrote
I said I would agree with taking a vacationi f we were talking about cc debt

I shortened the part I quoted maybe now it makes sense

That's how I took it as well.

My ex does not pay his child support and now owes over $7000 to my DD3. I would be LIVID if I found out he was going on a cruise that cost several thousand dollars! My child has had to wear hand-me-down clothing, eat donated charity food, and play with used toys because he can't man up and pay the piddly amount he was ordered to. Why should my innocent baby have to sacrifice her childhood so the daddy she doesn't even know can have a good time on her dime?

Disgusting.

I also want to add to the poster who said her DH loves arresting delinquent non-payers -- kudos to him! I wish there were more out there like him. My ex is right here in town, driving on an expired suspended license, working under the table jobs, doesn't pay taxes or child support and local law enforcement does NOTHING to try to find him. Last month I found out that he had a court date coming up in an unrelated case. I called the child support enforcement office to give them the listed address and info -- they said that his outstanding warrant for nonpayment likely wouldn't even be brought up because it's "low priority." The case was later dropped, so he's off the hook again. They KNOW where he is, they KNOW he has a warrant out, but they won't serve it and won't enforce it even if he's brought in for something else. What's the point then? The entire system is very frustrating the way it's set up to make it easy to be a deadbeat parent. Even if the system does catch up with him, I have come to terms with the fact that my daughter will NEVER see her money.

To the OP (if you haven't bailed) -- please please PLEASE think for a second what kind of message this is sending to the child.

:thumbsup2 I am owed 15,000 in child support. If you walked a mile in my shoes when I was a single parent you would not owe any money, you would have seen how much the kids needed it. I have a federal garnishee. He cannot renew his drivers license, fishing/hunting license or get a passport until he pays his support. If you can afford a cruise you can certainly afford support.:rolleyes1 You knew what you were getting into when you married him. Absolutely no sympathy here either. Honestly I don't know how people who owe child support sleep at night.

my ex has not paid child support this month and i dont know when i will get it, he says his car broke and he has to buy a car so he cant pay me...well its 2 weeks till christmas and it is WRONG not to pay! i take care of my son full time and he will not pay every month..LOSER anyway I am just glad my dh is a great guy and works overtime to make up the money....oh and if i found out he was going on a vacation his butt would be in court in a heartbeat!

I think I can say I've heard it all now. Taking a cruise while you owe back child support how stupid & selfish is that?
