We intended to drive but I just priced airtran from detroit in august and for 5 of us it was around $844. I don't think we will be saving all that much driving after you factor in gas hotels and food.

We have never flown air tran. What do you think of them?

Haven't for quite some time now, we seem to fly Southwest most of the time. Did fly Spirit back when they were not so much a nickle and dime ya to deaf operation.

Air Tran was fine, a budget airline that got us there with no frills. Have heard that they are delayed more often than other flights but we never experienced that.

We have and enjoyed it. We usually fly NWA and we booked airtran 2 years ago and very happy with the service. Be sure that you go to the right terminal as it flies out of the smaller one at metro --which was nice. It was very quiet and security quick

Dh flew to Orlando in March. Flight was delayed 3 hours but was due to the bad storms in Florida. No issues once the flight got going.

We flew with AT out of Detroit to Orlando last August! No issues! We're flying with them this August again but this time out of Buffalo!
Good luck!

We have flown them quite a few times with no problems. The satellite radio at each seat is nice (bring your own headphones). Once, they changed our flight time 2 hours later than scheduled and they allowed me to change our tickets to leave the day before, no charge. The customer service we have received has been very good. I prefer AirTran but Delta seems to be outpricing them from DTW lately.

Last WDW trip, we did AirTran from DTW. I understand they charge you for all baggage now (at that time we got 2 free). AirTran are famous for switching your flight time s& this happened to us so you have to know when you book to not be 'married' to those times. However, when they try to switch, you have to agree to/acknowledge the change. If you don't liek the new time, call and they can tell you what else is posssible. For us, they put us aon a non-stop from 1 stop because the change didn't allow enough time to change planes with two kids.

Have you checked Southwest? Last I checked them there were several $70 flights & SW don't charge for bags (2 free). If you'r eon their site click on the "low fare calendar". That way you can see their lowest price fare for everyday of the month you'd like to go. Very helpful if your dates are at all flexible.

We've flown Airtran twice and are using them again in Sept. We fly out of Flint instead of Detroit. Flint is just as close but much smaller and easy to get around. We have had no issues with Airtran. They do charge $15 per bag, 1 bag per person or the second bag is $25. They also charge $6 per seat per person per flight to advance select your seat. So for 4 people it is $48 more to pick the seats but with two little ones, it's worth it to me. So I just paid $829.72 total for two adults and two children. Hope this helps.
