Has anyone ever shipped thier Luggage to thier Resort before arrival?

If so, your experience, did it get there on time, what shipping company and what was the cost? I am thinking of doing this in August.;) I am flying and don't want to hassle with my luggage.;)
 
We do this all the time. I like Fed Ex and have had no problems in the years I have been doing this. We ship from the northeast, and typically 2 large suitcases with a combined weight around 90 pounds. The most our bill has ever been is $60 for the 2. We take them directly to a Fed Ex center to ship. If you ship through a service like MailBox, you may pay extra. We ship about 5 days from our arrival date and the bags are waiting for us when we get there. The sad day we head home, we take the bags to the Guest Relations counter at the hotel and they ship back for us. Many of the travel gurus advocate shipping your luggage ahead of time. Peter Greenberg, who does a segment on the Today show on occassion, has touted shipping as the way to go. In case you missed it, we use suitcases, not boxes. Fed Ex is gentler with the luggage than the airlines!
 
So is the suitcase shipped in a box? How does the hotel know that you will be a guest?
 
I've shipped boxes to the resorts many times. I generally use UPS because I can get a discounted rate at work. I put my name and arrival date on the label. I too have the resort mail the box home to me. I put a small roll of packing tape and a label in the box I mail down.

I think you have to put it in a box, UPS driver told me this, and they will pick it up at my house.:thumbsup2
 
I'd love to hear more about this from folks who've shipped their luggage before. I'd been toying with the idea anyway, so this is the perfect time to get more info!

We've done this, too.
We label the carton w/the resort name & our arrival date & name, also.
Inside, as for every pkg we mail, I put in our resorts name & address & our name, address & arrival date & also our return address--just in case.

I ship cases through Fed EX and UPS quite often. I can't tell you the number of times they have been damaged or delayed in shipping. Just allow a few extra days for them to be misplaced in shipping.

Just put Guest Name, arriving on

on the suitcase or box.
 
HMMMMMMM this could possibly work for us since we are very limited on luggage space.
 
I have shipped diapers, formula, wipes, baby food, swim floaties, just about anything you can imagine. I too have found fed ex to be very affordable and it's much better than hasseling with another suitcase when we're already handling the kids. I've never shipped all of our luggage but I can tell you these posts have me thinking about it! Good Luck
 
OK, for those of you who have shipped luggage before:

Are you putting everything in a suitcase then putting the suitcase in a box?

Are you just slapping a shipping label on the luggage and sending it sort of like checked luggage?

How large are the suitcases you're shipping?

I was already planning to send a box of decorations and snacks down to the hotel, but I'm having a little trouble wrapping my head around the luggage thing. I really think knowing my luggage has already arrived at the hotel and not having to haul it around in the airport may be worth the extra expense.

I am actually considering this as well because traveling with 3 small children in an airport it is a job by itself making sure they are behaving and are where they are supposed to be...I've also been wondering about putting the suitcases in boxes, etc, but also what happens with the luggage when it arrives at the hotel??? Do they keep it in guest relations? If so, are you charged because I would imagine that in most cases, the luggage gets there some time before your arrival? Also, has anyone ever had a problem with luggage being lost or seriously damaged?

You will have to put the suitcase in a box. You can't just send the suitcase if you send it UPS. Someone else posted FedEX will let you send just the luggage.

Or course to me, that is extra weight, why would anyone send the actual suitcase. I would just pack the box with what I need.

OK, now that we established that, I will look into the shipping cost. I think I might have a Box the suitcase might fit in, and I will have to weigh it, I have a shipping scale. Thanks for the website - just checked it out. It has some interesting info. I would think just putting the clothes in a box it would be fine as well. That would save us from having to buy luggage.

True, but I want to check my luggage for the trip home, just don't want to hassle with it on the way there.;) Box does sound good though.
 
We used to ship in boxes but switched to large suitcases. We do not put them in boxes. FedEx will ship them as is. We always have a luggage tag on them and a large shipping label with our check-in date in addition to the hotel address. FedEx then puts their shipping label on the suitcases with a special shipping tag that is designed to go around the handle of the suitcase. I usually grab a few extra for the return ship. I once questioned the counter agent at FedEx about using just suitcases. "No problem. Folks do this all the time." When we ship home the resort either charges our credit card or adds it to our resort bill (same difference really). I make a point of shipping by GROUND. One time they sent express. THAT was expensive! I've read the other posts from folks who have had problems. We never have had an issue. We even shipped to/from Disneyland Hotel. Think about this....you don't have to wait at the luggage carosel in Orlando for your bags...you don't have to wait hours for Magic Express to deliver your bags!!!
 
Oh, I forgot! When we did ship by boxes, they never held up well for the return trip. One trip seemed to be the most you could hope for without LOTS of duct tape!
 
LOL any questions about fed ex ask awayMy dad has worked there for 32 yrs and last yr we shipped a whole lot of stuff to Pop resort. Huge cases filled with those six pack bottled pop, cereal , snacks you name it he shipped it too us. We get a discount but Fed ex is the way to go with our without dad We would ship our stuff. This july we plan on again shipping stuff from tubes for the bread to 10 gallon buckets filled with snacks you name it Its gonna be there when we check in LOL.
