Has anyone ever rented an ECV at home and brought it with you?

Question is self explanatory. My 36 yo wife has brittle bones and broke both legs last year during our 2005 WDW trip.

I want to think about renting an ECV at home to, HOPEFULLY, save on cost.

Anyone else do this?

If you are driving it might be worth it. However, if you are flying you are probably better off using a wheelchair (airline provided) at the airport and renting from an off-site company. See the "disABILTIES! FAQ" for further comments and a list of the rental companies.

Two potential problems. One is if the airline messes up the ECV and the other is what do you do if it breaks down at a park. If it is your own you can get it fixed, and if it is a local rental they will replace it, usually within an hour.

I would agree with Cheshire Figment on the negatives and that it's probably much better to rent from Orlando.

Renting a manual wheelchair from home is a bit different, since much less can go wrong with it. If you do rent an ECV from home, I'd make sure first of all, that you inform the company that you are taking it out of state and get their OK (in writing). Plus find out how it would get fixed in case it needs repair and if it breaks, who would be responsible for costs and whether or not you would be able to get a temporary replacement at no cost.
There are some national companies that might have a branch in your area and Orlando and would not have a problem with this (I don't know since no one has ever posted doing it).
I'd also check that your homeowners insurance would cover in case of problem.
