Has anyone ever painted their hitch?

I'm working on adjusting the height of the head on our trailer hitch today. I started looking at the various parts and the shank of the hitch has some rust on it where it comes in contact with the receiver of the truck.

Just wondering if anyone has ever painted their hitch to cover up the rust,
and what kind of paint did you use? I'm assuming I'd need to sand it down a little first to remove the surface rust, but just didn't know where to go from there....

Just figured as long as I had it all apart, I might as well clean it all up too...

So finally, the long winter is over and the trailer comes out of storage next week!!!

Thanks for your help.....

I use a wire wheel grinder as opposed to sanding, make sure to remove all rust then apply Rustoleum (or any product for metal) primer, 2 light coats. For the finish coat apply a high gloss Rustoleum, black

Should hold up for a couple seasons, depending how often you remove/replace.

we have had various items powder coated. it doesn't cost a whole lot and looks really good when it is done. just a thought.
