Has anyone ever heard of a classroom assignment like this?

I asked DS if he remembers any other items and he came up with gumbo for Louisiana and chili for Texas. These aren't as bad as the fish and steak.

He also told me that the kids have to taste everything and he would have to try a few casseroles. Just the word scares him even if he doesn't know what's in them. There are actually two classrooms involved in this craziness since they share one room which means 42 dishes.

That's a lot of food to throw away.

At the end of every year, I asked my 2nd graders to tell me about their favorite day of the past year. Almost 100% mentioned a day where we cooked or their parents cooked. It made for great memories.

Don't be so quick to put down what the teacher is trying to do. I think she sounds like a fun teacher.

I don't have a problem with doing something like this, just the way the teacher is handling it. She states in her note that this dish must be made and it must be made by the child without help of any kind. We've made baked goods and sent them without any problems; I just think that this is overdoing it.

Another thing is all of the assigned dishes are apparently main dishes but I'll be confirming that. It's going to be a nightmare heating 42 main dishes not to mention keeping them cool.

Wow, been there, done that. The teacher also assigned this "international buffet" . She did however did give the kids the choice of what food they wanted for their country, but I as the class mom had to be there to serve everything. There were no allergy issues in the class, but I know one family is really bad off financially. He had Costa Rica and he brought in rice. I cookd some kind of shrimp dish with peas or something. I think ds had a
central american country. One girl just brought in like leftover chinese food her mom had from a party. One boys family is from the phillipines and she made something authentic. (I tasted it and it was pretty good). Another girl had Italy and had her neighbor make lasagna. One kid had France and had french toast sticks and one kid had baked potatoes from Canada I think. The kids only wanted to eat the lasagna and the french toast sticks. I had to run downstairs to the kitchen to cook them etc. I was glad when it was over. I would definetely call the teacher and voice your concerns.

Yikes, Planogirl!!!!

We're in the Lewisville ISD. We have *very* restrictive rules about food this year. We can't bring ANY homemade food in for classroom functions, only commercially prepared and packaged stuff. Not even cookies or cupcakes for birthdays. And there's a long list of "not allowed" treats, too.

There's absolutely no way this food would be allowed to be brought in, or for the students to share it here.

And, being assigned to cook fish! Yuck! It sounds like this substitute is a bit wacky. A lot of work, a lot of expense.

I think I'd be on the phone with a PTA rep or the principal or another teacher (depending on who I knew and had a relationship with), and run this assignment by them to see if it's even allowed.

IMHO, the best thing that could happen would be the principal cancelling the whole project.

Fish!!! It does boggle the mind a bit.
