Anyways… sickness doesn’t take a vacation, even when on a Disney cruise! Has anyone ever had an experience where they got sick? This is the place to tell all…

Yes we all caught horrible colds on a cruise sore throat and a terrible cough lasted for days and days - several kids on the cruise at the start were coughing and off it spread a lot of people got sick

Sad to hear. Did you guys end up stuck in the stateroom for the rest of the cruise?

We are in the platinum category and through all those cruises I have only been ill one evening. Just me, not DH. Had nothing to do with sea sickness, food poisoning, drinking. Just one evening of not feeling well. It came on at about two in the morning and I was back in bed by 2:30. Their bathrooms are very petite and I will tell you it looked like a crime scene by the time I was finished. While we cleaned up as best we could I will tell you that that room Stewart got a very good tip. I now pack sickness bags whenever I go on a cruise just in case.

A very broad question so the answer has to be yes, I'm sure some people have gotten sick on a Disney cruise.

But is it something that is likely to happen? More likely than any other cruise line? More likely that going to a Disney Park? That's a totally different question. One that I'd answer with no, it's not likely at all and no more likely that other alternative scenarios.

People do get sick on cruises. Did you have a specific question about it? There is a medical office onboard which is well-equipped for minor illnesses or emergencies. Whether or not you are confined to your stateroom depends on the illness.

I’m just wondering how folks have handled illnesses on a cruise… don’t want to be unprepared!

Yes, I've gotten the ubiquitous respiratory illness a couple of times on a cruise. You'll find the coughing in the main theater is massively worse at the end of a cruise than at the beginning.

My husband got sick on our first cruise on DCL and was quarantined in our room for 24 hours.

How to handle the "common cold" thing - really, if you're coughing your head off, stay in your room, or at least away from crowds. Yes, that means you might have to cancel an excursion or two.

If it's more dire - vomiting/diarrhea, please go to the medical center for help.

It's an excellent idea to bring whatever "just in case" medications you have at home along, as the cost of those things onboard (or in port) is ridiculous.

You can handle illness on the ship the same way you handle illness at home -- lots of rest, lots of fluids, see the medical team if you think you (or a traveling companion) may need treatment or medications that you didn't bring onboard. I usually travel with pain medication, cough medicine, stomachache medicine, and a thermometer.

If someone feels ill and has an activity booked (especially if they may be contagious), talk to guest services -- if the activity has a waitlist, you may be able to cancel with no penalty. That may be true even without a waitlist, since no one wants to spread disease.

Unfortunately, my husband got sick on our cruise last August. He was coughing too much to go to dinner the last couple nights. I think he had chills/fever for just one day. He stayed in the stateroom and put out the sign so our host wouldn't enter

I went to the medical center on deck one and told them his symptoms. They sold me some cough medicine. We already had Tylenol and ibuprofen (never leave home without those). Nobody ever said he needed to isolate, but he didn't feel like going anywhere. Our stateroom host was very concerned and frequently asked me how my husband was doing. He was very happy to see my husband sitting on the couch and eating (I brought meals back for him) when I opened the door for our host to be able to see my husband.

Yes. Our daughter caught a cold / flu on her first cruise. Not entirely unexpected given so many people were sick and she was still at the age where she would touch everything and then put her hands in her mouth. We missed out on the last ... afternoon and evening of the cruise.

And on our most recent cruise, I had the worst and most sudden food poisoning I have ever had. It was pretty much the sickest I have ever been. It was not pleasant (especially in the smallest, cheapest room), but it is what it is. It happened on our first full day on the cruise, so it could have been due to something I'd eaten before embarking, although the way it developed made me suspect it was something I'd eaten on the ship - probably the eggs at breakfast which I'd thought were simply overcooked.

I have caught covid 3 times on the Fantasy since 2021. We now travel with a bag full of various cold/flu meds. No way to prevent catching it when people get on the ship sick and cough all over other people.

On our last cruise (#10!) we all got a stomach bug. It was an awful 3 days. Had to cancel a bunch of activities. Youngest had to goto heath clinic (was required too) and got iv fluids twice. He was on a 24 hour quarantine. It wasn’t great. We are looking forward to our do over cruise!

I’m sure Madame Leota will stay away from your stateroom when you try your cruise again!

I got sick the last night of my first cruise. 🤢🤮. Now I don’t touch anything mayo based on Castway. Side eye you- potato salad.

Fine for the 5 other cruises that followed.

They do give out hand wipes entering the dining rooms, hand washing stations in the buffet. The Wish class ships, the CM serves the food at buffet instead of doing yourself. So more hygiene steps then you see at WDW.

Cabanas still lets you help yourself to its dishes unfortunately…

My daughter came down with the Flu during her birthday cruise last year. Thankfully, it hit mid- day the last day of the cruise (so Castaway Day - bummer). It was one of those where she was fine until she really wasn't. We left Castaway to go back to the room as soon as she said she didn't feel well and spent the rest of the cruise in our room. We had brought all the childrens medication we needed with us thankfully. So just started on Tylenol/Motrin, ordered room service for meals and watched TV. She mostly just slept and I slept with her on the couch bed, since she wanted to be held. We did early walk off and wore masks on the bus and flight home. The rest of the family got hit with it after arriving home.

My husband has had a migraine day on each cruise we've been on. He just stays in the room and sleeps.

I got very seasick during our honeymoon cruise, pills and bands stopped working. It was the worst in the dining rooms at dinner, the night it was the worst I left dinner. The head server sent a sleeve of crackers and a ginger ale back with my husband when he finished dinner, our server sent a dessert he thought I would like for if I felt better and another passenger who saw my husband with crackers and ginger ale sent a scopolamine patch she hadn't ended up needing. Our room was midship so I felt quite a bit better just being there but I will never cruise without the patch again.
