Has anyone ever gotten a Kitchen Towel Club/Exchange letter?

So a friend gave me one of these letters today. It says that I am to send one towel to the name on the list, then copy the letter and send it to six friends. I should then receive a bunch of towels in a few weeks.

Have you done this?

Does it really work?

I never respond to ANY offer of this type. If you feel like it, you can call your friend and politely decline.

It's pretty hard for these chain letters to work for someone at your level for mathematical reasons. Let's see, you're supposed to put your name on the list and send out a towel. Now, that's not such a bad thing for the person at the bottom of the list, who gets a free towel. But you have to send the letter on to six friends and they have to send it on to six friends and they have to send it on to six friends and they have to send it on to six friends and they have to send it on to six friends and they have to send it on to six friends and those folks would have to actually send you your towels.

Including the person to whom you are supposed to send a towel and assuming that everyone who gets this letter sends a towel and sends the letter on AND assuming that your friend is the person who first made this letter (the first tier), then the number of letters and towels sent would be = 6^1 + 6^2 + 6^3 + 6^4 + 6^5 + 6^6 + 6^7 = 335,922 letters/towels and you would receive 46,656 towels!

On the plus side, you could send out the towel, send on your six letters and get nothing in the future. (Personally, I'd rather get nothing than get 46,656 towels.)

BTW, chain letters are illegal: http://www.usps.com/postalinspectors/fraud/chainlet.htm

Yes... I have gotten a very similar letter. The only difference is that I was only to send out one towel and then send six letters after moving my name ( I am sure you will get the picture). I think I was promised something like 36 towels in return (it's been a while I can't remember). I am happy to say that I did get back five towels, along with some phone calls from people who were not intersted in participating and wanted to let me know to reend letter to someone else. I mean five towels was not exactly what was promised, but hey I did only send one. Let's put it this way... if given another chance I would pass! But youmight enjoy the experience once!

I've done this and I have to agree that I did receive a few towels back but nothing close to what the letter said I would get. I did a panty exchange once too (hated giving out that size). I seemed to get more in return for that one and boy did I get some interesting ones!

I saw one like this but instead of towels it was socks.

That is too funny!! I have heard of sending a dollar or something to that effect, but never towels. LOL. It's new to me :)

Flip-flops are the hot exchange around here now. I did a couple with Little Golden Books when the kids were younger. I think the kitchen towel one is pretty old, I remember my grandma doing it!
The exchanges would be fun but people never follow through. You're lucky to get anything back.
Ethans Mom - it's not the get-rich-quick kind of pyramid setup. No thousands of towels. Newfie is right - you're only supposed to get 36 towels back (from the 6 people that each of your 6 people send the letter to).
