I, along with a coworker, are in the process of forming a parent's/advocacy group Down Syndrome. We wanted to apply for tax exempt status. Has anyone else been through this process who might want to give me a hand? :confused3

I just am looking at the forms and, Holy Cow! There's a ton of stuff. The booklet is 63 pages long!!

Are we talking 501(c)3 status? We have started the process and yes it's long and the filing fees are about $500 if I remember correctly. Like I said, we've started it but not finished so I'm not much help!

Yup. That's the one. It's okay that it's a long process........I still have to file Articles of Incorporation with the State and that's going to take awhile too.

When I went through that with a group, we begged an attorney to do it for us pro bono. After all he wanted to make up for the fact that a large portion of his corporate clientele were strip club owners. :rotfl2: No way would I do it on my own. BLECH.

Our group used an attorney (board member) to write up the articles of incorporation, and a CPA (board member) filed the initial paperwork with the state and IRS.

As treasurer (a couple of years later) I had to file for the annual state renewal, and the IRS has to be updated periodically. ?yearly :confused3

I've been involved with a couple of groups that did and I've worked for nonprofits for many years. It's not a do-it-yourself job unless you're a lawyer.
