Has anyone done the Kayaking Nature Tour in Freeport?

I am looking into excursions for our cruise on 1/26/03 and I am seeing a kayaking nature tour that catches my eye. Has anyone done this tour? Is it worth taking?

I have a question for people that have taken this tour what type of kayaks are they using. My DH is against taking this tour only if you sit inside the kayak. He has heard some negative comments on that type of kayak. He said he would only go on the tour if the kayak is like a canoe. He is afraid if we were in the inside kayak that if it flips over and we cannot get out of it in time and we panic we could drown.

Thanks everyone. I need your help on this. I would really love to do this tour and now I have to convince my DH.

Minybear,

I've never done this particular kayak trip, but I can see you really want some help. I have kayaked in many places and different countries. The type of kayak you are referring to is mostly used for whitewater, or rough open see. These types of kayaks are for more advanced or experienced paddlers. I doubt that a tourist company would use them. I imagine you would be given a touring-type kayak, either a "sit-on-top" or an otter type. Go to www.oldtowncanoe.com to see the different types of kayaks.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Thanks for your comment. I hope this will convince my husband that they wouldn't use that type of kayak on this excursion. I have a feeling with a shallow water excursion they wouldn't use something that is unsafe for someone to use that has never kayaked.

Thanks again for your help.

Good morning Minybear,

My DW and I did this excursion about two years ago. It was AWESOME!! We loved it. The tour guides were great and they really take care to make sure that you have a good time. The only problem we had was trying to figure out who was in charge when it came to paddling:cool: DW finally just stopped and let me do all the work:smooth: I think that your DH would really enjoy it. Beautiful scenery and they stop at a great beach for some swimming. You will absolutely love this excursion:D

Do you remember the kayak you were in? Was it like a canoe? or was it with a rubber suit or a rubber suit around you? He wants the kayak to be like a canoe.

I really want to do this excursion and it looks like we would really enjoy it but my DH is stuck on this one little thing :(.

It was more like a canoe. I don't remember there being a rubber suit around us. I believe we had to wear life jackets. My DW will be home tomorrow morning and I will verify everything with her and also get her opinion of the excursion for you. I remember we both loved it. As a matter of fact my DW was a lot like your DH before this excursion and since we went on it she has looked forward to doing kayak excursions again. As a matter of fact I know that her and her DM just did a kayak excursion up in Glacier Bay during their Alaska cruise this past week. Anyway, I will get more info from her on her memory of the trip and post it for you tomorrow.

Take care,
Michael

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

I had my DH look at what you wrote and he said that is all he wanted to know that the kayak was like a canoe.

Minybear,

I did the kayak excursion in February. It was one of the highlights of my trip. The kayaks seat two persons and are the open top design (like a canoe). The kayaking is not technical and the water is very smooth. They give you a quick lesson and issue you a life vest and a waterproof bag for your valuables. The water is very shallow for the most part.
The excursion was divided into three parts. You kayak for about 1.5 hours. You spend about 1.5 hours on a great beach and are provided a picnic lunch. You take a nature hike through the Lucayan National Park, including a cave. The rest of the time is getting you to and from the park.
The guides are very informative. We asked them questions about everthing (eg. nature, island life, politics, history, education system, cost of living, housing). It was very informative.
This is the company that does the tour. http://www.thebahamian.com/kayak/

Have fun.
