I haven't even heard of this!!! My DS (9yrs) is going to flip out when I tell him about this!! Thank you, thank you!! He loves Star Wars and it would be a blast to have him make his own in Disney!! We are going in June so I have plenty of time to check it out. Thanks again!

Yes we did this on our last trip over Pres. Day weekend. I took my friends son and this was his big surprise. He built a double lightsaber (they are allowed for the same price) , he was really pumped cuz after getting of star wars and he saw the ones they have for sale, thats all he would talk about so needless to say he was pretty pumped to build his own when i took him to dtd.

Its a littel intimidating and I have to admit I had to ask for help, of course now i see it was easy..lol. Basically you pick what side youre on and build from there, they have instructions and you can pick from a few different designs for some things. When you get to the end and pay they then put the battery in to activate the lightsaber and they also give you a pin, yu can pick jedi or sith. If you choose the double lightsaber only one sides lights up but they let you take bulbs on both sides home....I think we ran into trouble cuz the instructions aren't set up clearly for the double lightsaber.

I think is looks pretty sturdy and it was pretty big, ours was about 6 ft, but i assume that a normal LS would maybe be half of that. If your kid is realy into SW then yes i think they will get a kick out of doing this just be warned theres a lto of kids just playing with it and parts are everywhere!!!

I just read about it a few months ago. Apparently it is somewhat new, because it wasn't there on our first trip in Oct. 2005. From what I have read the kids get to use any Hasbro lightsaber parts they want. It is electronic, has lights and sounds, and vibrations. And they get a pin at the end of completion. The cost is $19.95 each and batteries are included! I think that is fairly reasonable for WDW and considering most Star Wars toys are so expensive anyway.

As soon as I told my boys about this they were so excited that it is planned for our first day. They want to do this before anything else!!

So if we don't get any reports on it here, I'll be able to give you one (well, two) when I get back in May!

66 Days to go !!!!!!!!!!

My ds loves anything Star Wars. He has been asking for a lightsaber for quite some time. How much does it cost? Do you have to make a reservation or can you drop in? Is there a long wait time?

We are going to disney at the end of this month and I am trying to plan our trip now. Thank you for the idea. Now maybe...just maybe my son will do some chores to try and earn a little money :cool1: .

We saw this at DTD on our last trip and played around at the Lightsaber area but ended up not buying one because although our ds loves SW he was only about 3.5yrs at that time and we felt this would be better saved up for when he's older. Anyway, I think it was either $20 or 25.

Hth.

It's $19.95 + tax I think. And I'm pretty sure that's what my son paid for his regular lightsaber he bought an Toys-R-Us last summer. So it's not a bad price, when they get to "build" it themselves.

As soon as we booked our trip we started giving the boys chores and things to do to earn money, and tell them to save any birthday & holiday money they get, because the money they earn is their only spending money on this trip. We did this on our first WDW trip a few years ago and they each had $100 to spend by the time we left. More than I had to spend!! This time I have given my oldest an incentive to do well on his spelling tests at school. He gets $1 each week that he gets all 15 words right. Well, he's on his 19th week in a row not missing a word!!!!!

It's kinda like the potato head thing. No need for appt its towards the middle of the store and you just walk in and build whnever you want. Its 19.95 for either single or double lightsaber.

We did that this past weekend. My son loves it and let's just say that his dad really enjoyed putting it all together!! It was a nice little 'bonding' moment for them! It was a big hit for our family.

This sounds really cool - I'll have to remember it when we are there in 58 days!!

Just curious, would they be difficult to get on a plane?

Just curious, would they be difficult to get on a plane?

I would try to fit it in a backpack or something, not usre if it woul dbe allowed if your child was using it, best bet would probably be to put it in checked luggage tho just in case.
(altho i cant imagine anyone hijacking a plane with one :rotfl: you never know what the tsa will say. )

I've tried to do this the last 4 times we were at DTD - we go once a month generally. I am not afraid to admit I couldn't figure it out at all. The directions are horrible, the kids are all playing in all the pieces, and there was no CM help around at all! I thought the concept was great but the setup is horrible. I still haven't made it through the process because my DS5 gets tired of waiting around for me to finish it.

Keep in mind I have a Masters degree in English and I couldn't understand the directions!!!!!

So, this is definitely a DAD project with lots of help!
Good luck

I just called my husband about this and he was SOOO excited. Forget about DS....daddy will probably make one for himself!!! I guess I don't have to worry about the direction thing.

Thanks for all of the info guys!!!!

Ooohhhh - very, very cool! If you have one, do you mind posting a picture? My DS AND my DH would really enjoy this!

We were there in October, and I don't remember seeing this AT ALL. Where exactly is it in Once Upon A Toy? I know you enter the room that has the Mr. Pototo Head pieces, Then there is a room with a bunch of PoC stuff, keep walking and there are stuffed animals and dvd's, and then it's Pony and Princess land.

Thanks for the info!

Just curious, would they be difficult to get on a plane?

That's a good question. Does anyone know the completed size? Or have a picture of one? I know the regular lightsaber my son has extends to probably 5 ft long, but when closed is only about 2 1/2 ft.
I'd hate to have them make one and then have trouble getting it back home!

Thanks for all the great info everyone!!

oh just so I can add for reference of size, he is 5 and is 45 inches tall.

Here's an article about it:

http://www.starwars.com/collecting/news/hasbro/news20061207.html

If you click on the word lightsaber in that article it says:

When deactivated, a lightsaber appears as a polished metallic handle, about 30 centimeters long, lined with control studs. At the press of a button the energy contained within is liberated and forms as a shaft of pure energy about a meter long.
of course I think this is referring to a "real" lightsaber but I think the toy is supposed to mimic the real thing so it's probably comparible.

Edit to add: this is basically all the parts available for $20 at WDW put together in a "kit" you can also buy:
