My DS10 plays football, and unfortunately was at the receiving end of a heavy sac (QB). He has a broken collarbone (clavicle), and we are cruising on Septh 12th, (NOT DCL ..I know.. :rolleyes1 ), and was wondering about the recovery from perhaps someone who has been there, and perhaps done that. I am reading a lot, and we were told that he is out for 4-6 weeks.. I feel badly enough for him, now that his season has just started, that he has to miss almost the whole season, I am hoping that he can at least enjoy the cruise to take his mind off things...

Thanks ahead of time... :goodvibes

I would recommend getting an extra sling. My mom broke her collar bone. She didn't want to swim, but did want to get in the water. We had the extra sling so she could get it wet, but still have a dry one for when she was out of the water.

I broke my coller bone when I was young. After I had the sling on I dont rember haveing any pain. The doctor told me to take it easy. But I am sure I did what I wanted too.

My daughter broke her collarbone the day before we were leaving for vacation 2 years ago. She was six at the time and the doctor gave the ok as long as we took it easy and made her comfortable. We went to the Smoky Mountains and although I took her twin sister rafting and hiking, she enjoyed other things with Grandma. After about 3 days, she didn't complain about pain at all and although it wasn't the trip we had totally planned, she enjoyed herself. We also did the extra sling thing so that she could at least get into the pool. Her bone healed very quickly, your son will let you know what he feels up to doing. Have fun!

One thing I'm finding is you might want to check out the rating of the excuraisons(sp). While he might want to do the more active stuff. It might be more than he can do.

Thanks for the responses. Every day is a little less painful, which is great. The break is a "clean" one, thus we are able to remove the splint at night and for washing and such.

We will not do any excursions, perhaps just some beach time, and some mending!

THanks for all the repsonses, all in all, I think it will do him some good to get away near the end... :goodvibes

mommasita, we haven't done a collarbone but my DH did cruise with a broken femur when he was younger. His only advice to share was to be sure you have pain killers with you. On cruises the "patient" tends to get more involved than they might at home so sometimes they end up getting sore. I'm sure you'd do this anyway but DH was worried about your young guy. We hope he has a wonderdul cruise in spite of his injury. Tell him to look at the bright side...all of the girls will make a fuss over him. :thumbsup2

Good morning Mommasita - I am so sorry to hear of your DS's accident - having so many kids during my "younger" time, it appeared every time I was going to do something special with the kids, one of them was always "strapped" up - my daughter broke her collarbone when she was thrown off her horse, but I got her "double-strapped" being that we were 2 days before going accross the country in an RV - another time my oldest daughter dived into the water in the canal and also had the same break one week before we were to head to South Carolina - she faired well also.
It took the kids about 3 to 4 weeks before they felt better - I guess I have to be grateful someone didn't turn me in to child abuse since they all always appeared to have slings, bandages, cuts etc - they all look back now and think it was all hilirous - me it was panic time. Good luck sweetie and have a great cruise - this too will be a memory in the making for the older years :-).
Always

He's 10 and playing tackle football? I know Canadians are tough, but around here they don't allow anything but flag football until the kids are 14.

mommasita,
i just wanted to send you some pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: for your son and your cruise.

I'm sure you'll have a magical cruise, please give us a post when you return so we know how it went for all of you.

mom x4, grandma x4

Thanks Everybody...I appreciate each and every response, as I am a wimp, and am taking this MUCH harder than my son is...

TVGUY: He started tackle football at 7..Wow, that really is surprising, I thought you would be WAY ahead of us..On a side note, he is almost 11, and 5 feet 95 pounds, so he is big enough, just a hit gone wrong. We are tough though..lol...at least he is..Thank God. :lmao:

Shirley: Thank You, you are a true sweetie...This certainly will be one for the memory books, I think it will be good to get him away from this for a bit.

MOMx4 Grandma: I love reading your reports, thanks for the kind words, as always..

Cheryl...Thank you also...I am crying now, as i am a sap.

In case anyone thinks I am too wimpy (as Iam ) This is my guy who came into this world with a club foot that required MANY years of casts, braces, physio, and more, and just the fact that he is walking great is amazing, and he makes me proud. He has the attitude of a champion, and when I see him in his football gear, I get teary eyed, thinking of them telling me he may never walk, never mind being a starting Quarterback...Thanks everyone.. :grouphug:
