Has anyone been to Busch Gardens/Colonial W'burg VA?

Seriously, your post rocks and I really appreciate your breaking it all down for me!

Thanks for the thanks! ;) Seriously, though, I'm happy to talk about BG-Williamsburg. We've visited BG-Tampa as well, and it was nice, but the Wbg park is still one of my favorites in the US.

Try The Cheese Shop in Merchant's Square for sandwiches ~ excellent but can be crowded.

I soooo second this recommendation. They have a nice (if overpriced) selection of specialty foods, a good range of cheeses at their cheese counter, a fun little wine store in the basement, and the *best* sandwiches. The counter around the sandwiches is almost always crowded - if it's that way when you are there, I would recommend looking at the choices board, calling (757) 220-0298 to place a take-out order, browsing Wythe's candy shop next door for 10 minutes or so, and then picking up your order from the convenient, uncrowded outdoor pick-up window (rather than fighting your way up to the counter and ordering in person). I also recommend ordering extra house for your sandwiches - yummy!

Someone mentioned the skyride and the kiddie hang gliders - but his fav is the Roman Rapids -not too 'baby' but tons of wet fun for all (kind of like Kalihari River at animal kingdom!)

Oh, I knew that I was forgetting something! Roman Rapids is great!

Yeah, I was trying to figure this out! When I went to check out the prices on the 7 day flex tickets the child under 6 ticket came up as free but I see on the BG/WC websites that kids 3 & up need tickets. But children under 6 are free at CW. But then he wouldn't have a valid ticket for BG/WC?

It appears we used the Flex Ticket - which is reasonable if you plan to stay for a full week, but not for a couple of days. http://commerce.4adventure.com/EStore/Scripts/Skins/BGW/ticketsmultipark.aspx

When we did this in the past, our ticket had our photos on them. My DD was 5 or under that year. They had her dad hold her so they were both in his picture. She was allowed free with that ticket into CW, BG, Jamestown, Yorktown and WC. It was a great deal for us. We stayed for a full week and rented a timeshare condo that had a great pool, putt putt, tennis, game room, etc. We really enjoyed our time.

I don't know if anyone posted before but I just wanted to mention if you purchase the CW/BG/WC 7 day ticket you DO NOT have to pay for parking at any of the attractions for up to 7 days.
Parking alone at BG or WC is at least $10/day with the savings via internet.

You mentioned you and DH aren't big soda drinkers. Most of the vendors in BG where you can get the souvenier cups refilled have either fruit punch or lemonade and if you, the northener, think you can handle it...sweetened iced tea. :)

There's plenty for little kids to do in both parks. We've had season passes since DD7 was 1. She absolutely loves it.

Kind of OT and don't mean to scare you, but security at WC is great. When DD7 was 3 she crawled through one of the tubes in a kiddie area and I had to run around to the otherside to meet her. She got through before I got all the way around and I heard her scream at the top of her lungs. An older man had grabbed her arm. Five or six lifeguards came out of nowhere and surrounded him before I could get over there. I was totally impressed. Turns out it was a mistake. From behind DD7 looked just like his granddaughter, same height/approx age, same bathing suit and same hair color. But, wow, it was lightning fast how quickly they surrounded him.

Also, you might consider a day at VA Beach. Most kids love to play in the sand and it's budget friendly.

Hope you have a great time here in VA.

We're here now & are enjoying it. I just wanted to clear something up about the Bounce Pass. Your child is free under 6. That is one of the advantages. At Water Country & Busch Gardens when the adult shows a Bounce pass the younger child just gets waved in. At Williamsburg they get a little ticket that says, "I am under 6." My baby is only 2.5 so she would be free regardless, but I specifically asked for my future information and the answer has been the same all over. So unless multiple sources & people are wrong, the Bounce Pass allows parents to bring in children under 6 for free. To me, with free parking too, that makes it a huge advantage for parents with small kids.

As for Colonial Williamsburg being disappointing, we've loved it. I didn't feel like people were trying to sell me things, the employees have been wonderful and very informative. At the Millnery I had a delightful conversation about the advantages of bone stays and how fabric was smuggled in during the war. And my dh thoroughly enjoyed the silversmith. Kings Arms seated us promptly, had a wonderful peanut soup, delicious drinks, and traditional to our millenium: chicken tenders, hotdogs, and fries on their kid's menu.

We were only there 4 hours today but are greatly looking forward to the evening programs tomorrow & do all of the kid's activities on Tuesday. We got free to everyone tickets for Mother Goose at Powell House and will be doing their little "Kidcot" type program which we told the girls they couldn't do today, much to their disappointment (no time.)

I do agree with the actual "show" from 10:30 to 12:30 being not really for kids. We had been told be friends to do it for sure. The first one was a fiddler & a singer. We loved it. Then the next one was not for our girls. After that we didn't try anymore. Our girls are 7 & 8.

I did get advice from the lady at the ticket counter. She said to do "history in the morning, and fun parks the rest of the day." She said it's absolutely best to get a Bounce pass & take the kids for 2-3 hours of stuff at CW in the a.m. and then spend the rest of the day at BG or WC. That is pretty much what we intend on doing. Our kids love history, but seriously can only take so much in one sitting.

I hope this has helped. I'd write a TR with all our details if someone was interested, but I don't want to if people aren't or if it's against Disboards to waste space on a non-Disney area.

WE really enjoy Busch Gardens and Water Couintry. We have been several times and are close enough to do a weekend trip. There is lots to do for everyone!! BG is a beautiful park and is very clean. We find the food to be pretty good there too but expensive. It is more releaxing to me than Disney.

I agree with pps who recommend Jamestown. It is a great place to visit with kids.

We are staying at the Williamsburg Marriott, it has an indoor and outdoor (connecting) pool and we got it gor only $103/day.
!!!! I'll have to look into this one!

I can't wait for the kids to see Williamsburg... I think you have to be interested in history to really enjoy it.
Since this is going to be a short trip I'd definitely like to check it out a little, especially as a PP suggested, to walk around the "free"parts. I don't know how my son & his 5YO attention span would be with tours. But we'll probably do it the day that we arrive, leaving the next 2 days as park days.

I am so glad you started this post!
Me too! The responses have been overwhelming and there's a ton of great information here. Plus all of the positive responses are making me feel pretty good about this trip :goodvibes.

Someone mentioned the skyride and the kiddie hang gliders - but his fav is the Roman Rapids -not too 'baby' but tons of wet fun for all (kind of like Kalihari River at animal kingdom!)
Kalahari was one of my son's favorites, along with Splash Mountain and (believe it or not) the part of the movie set tour at DHS where there's a fire & then the water comes pouring over the rocks & it looks like it's going to wash away your tram. So with that in mind, what do you think of Escape from Pompeii? Too intense for a 5YO?

The counter around the sandwiches is almost always crowded - if it's that way when you are there, I would recommend looking at the choices board, calling (757) 220-0298 to place a take-out order, browsing Wythe's candy shop next door for 10 minutes or so, and then picking up your order from the convenient, uncrowded outdoor pick-up window (rather than fighting your way up to the counter and ordering in person). I also recommend ordering extra house for your sandwiches - yummy!

Again, such excellent tips. I can't thank you enough!

Thanks for clearing this up. It's really too bad that we can't stay longer. But even for a 3/4 day trip it's actually cheaper for us to get the 7 day flex ticket since we won't need to buy a ticket for our son.

I don't know if anyone posted before but I just wanted to mention if you purchase the CW/BG/WC 7 day ticket you DO NOT have to pay for parking at any of the attractions for up to 7 days.
Parking alone at BG or WC is at least $10/day with the savings via internet.
You've just confirmed it! Awesome! That's going to save us 30-40 bucks right there.

You mentioned you and DH aren't big soda drinkers. Most of the vendors in BG where you can get the souvenier cups refilled have either fruit punch or lemonade and if you, the northener, think you can handle it...sweetened iced tea. :)
I've heard about that southern sweet tea. I may have to work my way up to it ;).

Kind of OT and don't mean to scare you, but security at WC is great.
Not scary, actually reassuring. And things like this are important. I tend to watch my son pretty closely anyway but it's impossible to keep an eye every second, especially in a situation like you described.

Also, you might consider a day at VA Beach. Most kids love to play in the sand and it's budget friendly.

Hope you have a great time here in VA.

Since this is going to be a short trip I doubt that we'll have time for VA beach but it's sounding like there's so much to do that we'll definitely be back. My husband & I had been to VA on our bikes a few times pre child and we always had a great time. The people & the state were both lovely :).

We're here now & are enjoying it. I just wanted to clear something up about the Bounce Pass. Your child is free under 6. That is one of the advantages. Live, on the spot reporting. I love it! As well as clearing up the age/parking questions about the 7 day flex tickets. Thank you so much! And I'm so glad that you're having a good time (and that you found the time to post).

I hope this has helped. I'd write a TR with all our details if someone was interested, but I don't want to if people aren't or if it's against Disboards to waste space on a non-Disney area.
It has helped hugely. The only thing that I'm trying to find out is if the children's programs at CW will still be going on during August 21-24. Also, how are the crowds?
And I'm sure that people would love to read a trip report. I think, maybe, you could post it on the Community board? I was searching for anything "colonial williamsburg" related before I started this thread so a trip report would have been great (I did find a few). They helped to confirm that this trip was a good idea & not a waste of money (albeit signifcantly less $ than a WDW trip!)

WE really enjoy Busch Gardens and Water Couintry. We have been several times and are close enough to do a weekend trip. There is lots to do for everyone!! BG is a beautiful park and is very clean. We find the food to be pretty good there too but expensive. It is more releaxing to me than Disney.
I do know that we'll be taking advantage of the meal voucher deal & relaxing as opposed to a WDW kind of pace is actually a good thing right now :rotfl:.

I was looking through the WC/BG/CW printouts this Saturday & my son asked if he could see them. He was looking at the pictures (WC) and, of course, asked if we could go there. So I told him about the parks & the rides, and especially the water park, and explained that we were thinking about going there instead of WDW. No problem, as I expected. He just wanted to hear about these "new" parks & what kind of rides they have :).

I know that I keep saying it but this thread has been a huge help with both planning & my getting over that awful "I've got to cancel my trip" feeling. And I'm so happy that this thread is helping other people out too! I can't thank you all enough.

We will be in BG on Thurs, 8/14 to Sun, 8/17. We got rooms for $55 at the Crowne Plaza on Pocahontus Drive with priceline and 7 day passes for $80 (park-hopping incl), and we are driving down from Baltimore area. So three rooms for three nights, and tickets for 7 people for 7 days will be ......$1276. With the two babies (2 and 10months) there will be 9 of us.

We have been to Williamsburg many times. One fun thing to do is to walk around the college of William and Mary. It is a very beautiful college. My husband and I enjoy the tour of Williamsburg with the bus rides. But it would get old fast for children.

The food inside the park is not that good. We usually go to the Water Park in the AM, leave for lunch and cleanup, then to to Busch Gardens for the afternoon and evening. There are plenty of restaurants all over the place, particularly on Richmond Road.

We are trying the Sesame Breakfast this time with our 2 year old grandson. Hoping it is comparable to WDW.

Busch Gardens is a very pretty park. My second fav after WDW. Have a good time.

That is a REALLY tough one for me. My 6 yo decided for himself not to go even though he LOVED Kalahari and Roman Rapids - and LIKES Splash Moutain. I wanted him to try it - but after he tried Big Bad Wolf he was too spooked, so atleast it wasnt my decision. The drop is bigger than Splash Moutian - but very fast - once it's over, it's over. The 'fire' inside is not very intense, espcially since he like the DHS effects. My thinking is it would be fine as long as a big drop seems ok to him. I know....no help at all, sorry! :goodvibes) I hope your trip continues to be great!!! Thanks for catching us up.

We have to cancel our Sept WDW trip due to finances (ugh). But I would like to plan some sort of getaway before my little guy starts school and it looks like a trip to W'burg would be affordable. I haven't told him about our WDW trip being "postponed" until next year (maybe) but I think that he'll be just as delighted with any trip as long as there's a pool at the hotel & a water park involved :). (I'm the one that's upset about the WDW trip but I know that it's the "right" thing to do).

I was thinking Colonial W'burg the 1st day, Busch Gardens the 2nd then WC for last.

Can anyone tell me about the parks (Busch Gardens & Water Country USA), what to expect & of course any advice and tips about saving money while there?

Thanks to the DIS I've started my research but there's no place like the DIS for planning help :goodvibes.

They've got some decent packages now where hotel + park passes for 4 days/3 nights can be had for around 500$ and there are prepaid meal deals available for the parks themselves.

My son (5) may be too young to get a lot out of Colonial Williamsburg but he loved Mystic Seaport so I think that he'd enjoy this as well.

I sincerely appreciate any help, suggestions & BTDT tales!

Thanks in advance.
We just got back from Colonial Williamsburg. You can click on the link in my siggy to follow my trip report.

We are trying the Sesame Breakfast this time with our 2 year old grandson. Hoping it is comparable to WDW.

We did this earlier in the year. There is a special parking area for you back around by the back entrance of Ireland. Try to be near the front of the line to get in the room, and then jump in the buffet line right away, as the line gets quite long later. (The line does die down eventually, but by that point characters are circulating.) The tables are on tiered platforms, so everyone can see the show up front. The characters do a little song and dance routine, then tables are called up in order to have pictures taken (with Elmo and BB while we were there). While the pictures are going on, other characters (Bert, Ernie, Cookie Monster) move among the tables for hugs, pictures, etc. The characters were really into it when we were there - Bert picked up a banana from our table and pretended it was a telephone, Cookie Monster tried to eat one of our empty plates - our kids (particularly the at-the-time 2.5 year old) loved it!

Oops...I see that I got moved to the community board. Sorry about that Mods!

We will be in BG on Thurs, 8/14 to Sun, 8/17. Wow, that's a ridiculously good deal! How did you score the 7 day hoppers for 80$? The BG site lists them for 98$ (not that I'm complaining, seriously, as our trip will cost us less than 1/4 of what the WDW trip was going to cost and I stil think that 98$ for a 7 day hopper is a great deal)

The food inside the park is not that good. We usually go to the Water Park in the AM, leave for lunch and cleanup, then to to Busch Gardens for the afternoon and evening. There are plenty of restaurants all over the place, particularly on Richmond Road.
We'll see how it goes. Is BG super crowded in the afternoon? Because I realized that we'll have to go to BG or WC the day that we arrive in order to pick up our tickets. No way could we pull into, say, BG's parking lot & tell our son "no, we're not going here right now"...that would be too cruel!

Busch Gardens is a very pretty park. My second fav after WDW. Have a good time.
Thank you. All of these positives are really encouraging :).

It does help. I guess that we'll leave it up to the little guy when we get there. If he can see the drop at Pompeii from the outside, before you get on line for the ride (like you can with Splash Mountain) that may make him decide against it. Thankfully he didn't inherit my fear of heights :rotfl:.

We just got back from Colonial Williamsburg. You can click on the link in my siggy to follow my trip report.
Yes! Thank you, Dave. Your TR was one of the first things that came up when I searched the boards for "colonial williamsburg" and it was one of the things that made me decide that it would be a good choice. I enjoyed your report very much...and loved the photos :).

I'm SO torn about booking this dinner. I think that my son is still young enough to be delighted by it...but I'm not positive. Oh well, I still have time to decide. It's not like I needed to make my reservation 180 days out ;).

BTW- I did come across a coupon book at the supermarket on the HUGE frito lay back to school display. It's a small book with a yield sign on it & includes a discount code for 30$ off when you book 2 nights at Hotels.com. Since I hadn't booked our rooms yet (just want to make sure that the vet can board our rottie while we're away) this is perfect timing for us!

Thank you all so much. And I'd still really appreciate suggestions for more good, local spots to eat or any other things of interest. I'm putting it all in my little index card book for easy reference ;)

We are doing the breakfast with Elmo. Early entrance into the park and parking in preferred for the cost of general parking. Cheaper than the dinner and how can you go wrong with breakfast foods.

Also check out BiddingforTravel.com. It helps in getting rooms with Priceline. I have had very good luck with them. Our rooms are just $55 per night and the Crown Plaza is a 3 star hotel with two pools.

Escape from Pompeii is probably a 60 second ride, total (after you go up the hill). And hey, if he doesn't want to go on but wants to get wet just go stand on the observation deck :thumbsup2

I've only ridden Dark Castle once. I imagine it would be pretty intense for little kids (the themeing of the line is a lot like Haunted Mansion though). I felt so sick after riding it though (the older I get the less I can handle rides like this).

If your kids are into frogs their's an aquarium in the first gift shop to the left when you enter the park, full of poison dart frogs. My bf and I stopped by the other day and they were feeding them and the lady (caretaker) told us all about the frogs and how they were trying to breed them. It was pretty cool and there was no one else in the store.

There's another spot I love to go to that is behind the bird walk through thing (a big netted area you can walk through and have birds land on you/be right next to you/etc.). Behind there are little areas where animal caretakers will bring out hawks and parrots and lizards and talk all about them and let kids touch them. There's also a butterfly garden and an area where they've planted things that attract bunnies. My bf and I were relaxing on one of the benches back there and all of these baby bunnies were around us. It was so cute.

My favorite place to get peace and quiet at Busch is behind the clock that dances coming away from Alpengheist (not towards New France). There's an ice cream place under the clock but on the other side is a bunch of shaded picnic tables that no one is ever at. Many times we'll get a funnel cake (located across from the ice cream place) and head over here to get away from the crowds.

Sesame Place is always crowded when we go but it has made Land of the Dragons a lot less crowded. There are a couple of rides that parents can ride with their kids too.

Over at the stable in Heatherdowns they bring out Clydesdales at certain times so that people can have their pictures taken with them, if that interests you.

Pets Ahoy is a cute show (but not as cute as the one in Sea World :) ).

One of my biggest complaints with BG (and I've been a season pass holder since I was 4) is their lack of air conditioned restaurants. The one in Tampa has quite a few. It is always hot and humid here in the summer (unless we're lucky enough to get a cold front). The Festhaus is one of the only options (Grogan's Pub is air conditioned but mainly serves drinks) but at least it's big enough to fit a lot of people. They have a "German" line towards the back and an "American" line up front. Ther German line has the sausages, Reubens, German potato salad, etc. but you can also get the same desserts/salads as the "American" line. The "American" line has the typical pizzas (Yuck IMHO), fries, chicken nuggets, etc. and is usually much busier.

Also check out BiddingforTravel.com. It helps in getting rooms with Priceline. I have had very good luck with them. Our rooms are just $55 per night and the Crown Plaza is a 3 star hotel with two pools.
It sounds awesome. But I've never used priceline (we just don't travel that much) and am apprehensive. Maybe I'll get my nerve up ;).

Great idea! Plus he can get soaked while he decides if he wants to ride it or not.

I was planning to skip this since we discovered at WDW that my little guy isn't thrilled with 3D (that might have changed, though). In addition I thought that it might be a bit too much.

You rock! Thank you SO much for sharing your tips (even the ones I didn't quote back ;)) :goodvibes! The animal stuff will be GREAT.

We just came back.... See my thread and trip report here...

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2131648

Let me know if you have any questions...
Thank you! Your report was the other TR that came up when I did my w'burg search on the DIS and it was a big help. I had no idea about Felicity & my God daughter is very much into American Girl dolls. This might be a great trip to suggest to her family.

Yech...we've hit our first bump in the road. Our vet can't board our rottie for the weekend so now I need to look at pet friendly hotels. Of to amend my searches ;). Anyone with experience in that area is encouraged to weigh in.
Maybe I can convince my husband that we can trade up to a more expensive room because we won't have to pay boarding fees :rotfl:?

yeah, that'll fly...

I love this thread!

--------------------------
OP -- Not sure what your boarding budget is, but the Old Towne Pet Resort in Alexandria, VA is great and would be on your way. :)

My boyfriend and I are planning a weekend trip to Williamsburg in mid-September. It's also in lieu of a trip to Disney... he got a new job and has no vacation time, so we're making the most of the weekends.

We made reservations at a local B&B and plan to spend time seeing the historical sites. :) I'd really love to get some recommendations on places to have a nice, romantic dinner.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but would sure appreciate some PMs with ideas!!

Thanks!
MJ

I'm SO torn about booking this dinner. I think that my son is still young enough to be delighted by it...but I'm not positive. Oh well, I still have time to decide. It's not like I needed to make my reservation 180 days out ;).

What, you didn't wake up at 6 am, with the BG number programmed into speed dial? Then I guess you're out of luck....

Seriously, though, before the breakfast, my 5.5 yo DD acted like this whole Elmo meal was just so beneath her. At the breakfast, however, she had a fantastic time, and really was into seeing the characters. YMMV, of course!

We made reservations at a local B&B and plan to spend time seeing the historical sites. :) I'd really love to get some recommendations on places to have a nice, romantic dinner.

The Trellis gets the most press about being Williamsburg's nicest, most romantic restaurant, but I have always found it to be a little tired and out of date. There aren't a lot of options for something really romantic, but The Fat Canary has a great adult vibe and very good food, and Christiana Campbell's Tavern at night can feel very evocative of colonial times. [Note to rottiemom: during the day, Campbell's very kid-friendly.] The Williamsburg Inn is also pretty fancy, and I know a lot of people like it - for me, it's just okay.

Another fun activity at night is to do the Gambols at Chowning's Tavern - they have light snacks, good drinks, live (colonial) music, and replica dice, etc., type games.

You're welcome! :goodvibes

Oh, and I don't know if you know about this website:

I use it whenever I travel with my dog. You can search pet friendly hotels/lodges/B&B's wherever you're going or even in route to where you're going.
