Actually, I've just realised that this is a moot point because the winning bids on any given day are going to depend on the number of unsold seats in PE and what other bids have been placed. Still, I'd be interested to know if anyone's been successful.
We tried for a Feb flight and only placed a bid of around £100 I think which we didn't really expect to win, we were right and received a sorry "Upgrade Unavailable" message.
Might also be interesting to find out how many did bid but wasn't successful like us?
Virgin Atlantic is launching a proof of concept trial of a bid priced upgrade platform, which allows passengers that booked direct with Virgin Atlantic the opportunity to bid for an upgrade from Economy to Premium Economy.
The trial will be for a limited time and will utilise limited cabin availability.
This trial commences on 21 December (for departures after 06 January), and will only be available to passengers flying on VS15/16 to and from Orlando and VS45/46 to and from New York JFK.
Direct sell passengers will be able to access this service through Manage my booking at http://www.virginatlantic.com.
Should the technology prove to be successful during the trial, Virgin Atlantic will look to fully launch this innovation through all channels. However, prior to taking such step we will consult with our trade partners how best to extend the functionality.
Id never heard of this either
Do you bid on a number of seats you want! I should imagine that anybody who wanted to PE seat would bid high to ensure they would get it making it not much of a good deal anyways.
I would LOVE to have upgraded this yr but i just dont think unless my health insurance money comes through "thats a whole other ball game" thats we would afford to upgrade all 6 of us(could always leave the kids and DM in economy)
Virgin started this trial in January and you first need to have booked directly which them and have a Virgin Atlantic booking reference.
The trial was only being carried out for those who had booked economy seats either on the the outbound Gatwick to Orlando flight number VS15 and the return flight Orlando to Gatwick VS16.
You didn't need to have booked both flights numbers to be able to bid, so if you had only booked the VS15 flight you could click on "Manage Your Booking" and click on another link where you could have placed a bid on a premium economy upgrade which would be for all seats in your booking on the outbound trip only.
So as long as you had booked directly with Virgin Atlantic on one of those flights numbers then you should be able to access the auction through the "Manage Your Booking" link.
We bid back in January for a February outbound flight only and received a message about 2-3 days before that flight to say we were not successful.
We tried it in January but also got the sorry not successful email a few days before the flight, I think we put in a bid of around £120 each, there were still a number of empty seats in PE on the flight as I went to check. I was glad I didnt win as we had a row of 4 each on the way out and back cause the plane was half empty.
