we are there at this moment in time ,we arrived on thursday and after unpacking we decided to have a look round port orleans riverside ,we only walked for about 15 minutes and three of us were bit ,me my wife and daughter ,anyway my wife bite swelled up and had a funny looking bubble come up on her knee.after 2 days she decided to go to first aid at mk and they send to the local hospital {20 days of tablets ,injection and take the fluid or puss out of her knee } she has to go back on tuesday $340 so far .insurance company will not be happy

I get bit all the time - what was it that got you?

I always have nasty mosi bites. The last time we went my wife got bit really badly - we went to Seaworld not long after and she was in real pain, so we went to the first ais place and they GAVE her a pot of lotion( which we still have and use occasionally). The worse bot was that hey said that is her bites dodn't go down overnight, we needed to get her to hospital for fear of septosemia - a bit scary!!!!
Anyway, all was well after their magic potion.

Yes, I've been bitten many times. The combination of heat, water and my quality blood means that everyone else is "safe" when I'm around.

I always get a nasty reaction to Mosquito bites in Florida and they end up infected from me scratching them and I should know better They usually swell to the size of saucers and take ages to resolve.

Some of us have got it...and some of us wish we hadn't

apparently Avons 'skin so soft' moisturiser is the best bet against bites, even Attenborough , Judith chalmers and co wear it, other theories are that eating a lot of garlic makes your skin taste bitter so the mozzies don't like it.
I was bitten by sandfly about 3 years ago in the caribbean, the pain was unbeleivable and I was close to losing my feet through the reaction, apparently once it gets up to your liver you're a goner so I was very lucky. only took 6 months and a huge amount of drugs to get it under control.

We always get bitten if we are near water at dusk, I think thats worst time for the mosi bites, Only got bitten 1 evening in 25 nights last month but we were having a waters edge walk at Westside DTD, I had 4 bits DW had 3.
Only time we have had to seek medical attention was in Majorca never in Florida.

Hi there Hope you're having a good time. Yes, last month I came back with about 5 insect bites, 4 on my legs and 1 on my back, right in a place I couldn't reach to scartch, infuriating I tried the insect repellant after-sun but I think if they like you, they always like you and clearly I am thier main course. Hope you're not too bitten,

Eek, can't say I've ever been bitten in Florida! We are staying in POR this time too!

Perhaps last time I didn't get bitten because we took sun cream with insect repellant. But I usually get bitten to buggery - in Greece I came back with 80 bites just on my legs!!

This is a very good point... places you are most at risk are:
- near bodies of water
- in the dusk/dark
- if you leave the doors/windows and mosquito nets open into your room/villa
- in the shade.

So prime times/places to get bitten are eating/swimming/playing crazy golf outside or even walking between your car and a restaurant in the evening or at night.

Remember that Florida is, for the most part, a BIG SWAMP... it's just that people (including Disney) have built loads of houses, hotels and theme parks there. So, in a way, we are invading on the mosquito's land

The first thing we do when we get to Florida/Caribbean is stock up on US bug repellent spray - it is far stronger than ANYTHING we have over here. There are reasons for that: I don't believe that the US stuff is allowed over here (because it is so strong). So, if you use it, you need to read the instructions carefully and use it carefully (especially around young children, the elderly, asthmatics, spraying around your face etc...). We spray ourselves (regularly) from head to toe and are normally fairly ok.

Last time I was bitten in WDW was when we went in August 2003 - we were staying at AKL and we planned to go to DT for the evening. It was the one time had hadn't applied insect repellant and while waiting for the bus I was eaten alive!

Only ever had a bad reaction to a bite once, and that was in Majorca. I was bitten on the eyelid and it swelled up so much I couldn't see!

Thanks for the replies, we have got avon so soft but never used it that time ,its been on us ever since , holiday is going well and we went to chef mickey on saturday morning for our sons 6 birthday {recommend it highly }

the parks have been packed so far as its been labor weekend,so not been on many rides ,but hopfully it gets quiet now

anyway we are off to ak now and its our wedding anniversary today so i might treat the wife to a nice meal {burger and chips } ive always been the romantic type.

I got a bite on my big toe on our last last evening in 2004. I was travelling on the boat from POFQ to DTD. By the time I was getting on our flight home my toe was huge, blistered and black- not pretty at all. I had to take my shoe off on the flight. As one of the male cabin crew passed he noticed it -wasnt too hard to miss at this point. He whispered in my ear "Babe your going to need a large G&T and an ice pack in that order".

I went straight from the airport to A&E and was on antibiotics for 2 weeks.

This year in Mexico I used Jungle Formula Tropical spray and didn't get bittten once which is a first for me. I've stocked up on this for November.

The Mozzies love mine and DH s blood type. Since we eat garlic in everything - its no deterrent. We use Deet woodsmen and thats not effective. They must even like the taste of alcohol in the blood. Tried that quite a few times and that doesnt work. Unfortunately DH has allergic reaction to their bites. The bites swell and ooze a clear yellowy liquid and he was told by the WDW medical centre he was allergic to the mild venom the mozzies secrete in their saliva to numb the area and keep the blood from clotting whilst they drink. They gave him some solacaine lotion and advised benadryl. The benadryl brought the swellings down rapidly. If you scratch the bites, put an antiseptic over the bite to avoid infection. I got bit loads by those horse flies at POR pool, and by mozzies around the lake at the Grand Floridian whilst watching wishes.

Not as bad as your but my kids were bit all over last week at WDW, and in particularl the lagoon MK Polynesian I had to buy stuff in the Polynesian to deal with the bites.

Might have been from watching Wishes at the beach or the little boat crossing to the Poly from MK.

But also noticed more at Wilderness lodge

Witch Doctor and Tea Tree oil work for me once Ive been bitten - I always suffer badly!!!
Nothing seems to work for preventing them.

I hear they spray WDW with bug repellent to deter the worst of them, but it doesn't seem to have helped some of the posters here! =/ I think i've just been lucky as i'm usually extra appetising to midges and such over here as is my bf so i'll be buying bug repellent when we get there.

We have never ever had any problem before, we went the previous week to Mexico on the Disney Magic, we had repelant there no problem, so WDW was a surprise this time, might be the hot humid weather, or Seven Sea Lagoon has a problem now???

Previous time I remember Disney advising us they had just sprayed the lake and not to go near it, so it must happen every so often.
