Has anyone become allergic to a medication

When I had my gallbladder out I suddenly became allergic to Vicodin. I broke out in hives and had severe itching. I was 37, I think.

Yep. Took penicillin all the time as a kid. Took it in college and broke out in a itchy, itchy hives.

Yes, muscle relaxers. They kept trying me on different kinds before my back surgery - I would take a new one for a couple of weeks with no problems. Then, all of a sudden I would get hives, etc.

Oh, yes. I also developed an allergy to penicillin and, odd at this may sound, Neosporin and other petroleum based medications.

Yep - penicillin and sulfa based drugs. Was fine with either one for many years then just suddenly started getting a rash/hives anytime I took them.

I used to be able to take Codine, but a few years ago I developed an allergy to it. Just when it kicks in and stops the pain it will, well with out being too gross, make me toss my cookies. I would also itch all over, but no hives. I had no idea how many pain killers had codine in them.

DH did, he broke out over an antibotic. It was the worst thing ever, he had these red angry hives all over him, face and everything.

Poor guy, I had to drag him to emergency care, he kept telling me he would be fine (fine in a I look like lumpy lizard man way)

I've been able to handle penicillin all my life, but for some reason a few years ago (when I was 28!) I broke out in horrible hives after taking a dose. Now I can't take it anymore!

Me too. I break into hives like crazy if I take penicillin. I didn't realise it was so common!
It was funny, they kept giving me more penicillin to cure the hives before they realized that is what was causing it!

Aspirin.

Took it as a child with no problems. As an adult I became allergic, my lips and tongue swell. I can't take Ibuprofen either, I get the same reaction.

Oh God, that stuff made a mess of my face. I ended up with, I kid you not, thousands of little fluid filled bumps on my face, neck, chest, back and arms. Yikes! The doctors told me it couldn't possibly be from the Zithromax but it happened to me twice on that very drug and it also started to happen to me on tetracycline. Eeeek! So, if that counts as becomming allergic to a drug not previously allergic to, then yes.

I had this happen with Sulpha medications. Took them for years for recurrent UTI's. Took it one time, thankfully in the hospital, and had a horrible reaction to it. Its amazing the amount of meds that have Sulpha in them also.

I am now allergic to penicillin as well. I have had so many sinus infections through the years and this drug was prescribed each time.

I became allegic to tylonel when it first came out in the early70's Drs would refuse to believe me and prescibe it andI would react. almost every otc product has it . Only in the last few years have the drs believed me. orginally it was proclaimed as 'no one would be allegic-good for everything' lately drs have found out only 2% of the people have reactions. Ihad a dr tell me to my face that I was not allegic that tylonel had no side effects.

I developed an allergy to penicillins as an adult, I was able to take them as a kid. I am also allergic to sulfas and cephalosporins, but I don't really know when those allergies developed, because I am not sure if I was ever prescribed them as a child.
