My kids want to take cookies on a stick for Valentine treats- we are allowed to bring homemade treats at our school. I have tried to search online to see whether or not I need to soak the craft sticks before baking, but I haven't found anything. The only thing I found was that I should cut the butter in my recipe in half. Any other tips or experiences?

You just stick them in the cookies as soon as they come out of the oven and are still warm. Make sure the cookies are thick enough to accommodate the sticks.

Here's what I made as a surprise for DS8 a few years ago. It's from www.tasteofhome.com (enter in "cookie pops" in the search box to see a photo and the recipe below).

Surprise Cookie Pops Recipe

You will only need two ingredients—and some Popsicle sticks—to make this fun dessert. Store-bought dough and candy bars combine for a dozen sweet treats that will have your kids reaching for more.—Taste of Home Test Kitchen, Greendale, Wisconsin

6 ServingsPrep/Total Time: 25 min.

Ingredients

2 Milky Way candy bars (2.05 ounces each)
12 Popsicle sticks
1 tube (18 ounces) refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough

Directions
Cut each candy bar widthwise into six pieces; insert a Popsicle stick into each. Cut cookie dough into 12 pieces. Flatten dough; wrap each piece around each candy bar piece, forming a ball.
Place 3 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350° for 13-15 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool for 3 minutes before removing to wire racks. Yield: 1 dozen.

I don't see why you can't use sugar cookie dough as opposed to chocolate chip.

I have a cookie pan from Wilton which came with the the recipe below. I don't think you will need the pan, but the recipe is good, the cookies are not rock hard.

Also consider making cake pops, they are good and fun for the kiddies.

For the wilton recipe, can they be rolled out and used with cookie cutters? It says "do not chill" so that's what prompted my question?

Thanks for all the ideas- they were a hit! I used my favorite sugar cookie recipe and I tried to cut the butter in half, but the dough was too crumbly. So I added the rest of the butter, rolled them thicker than normal, slit the bottom of the hearts and inserted craft sticks. I baked them with the sticks and there was no problem at all. SOOOOOOOOOOOOO CUTE!!!!
