Has anyone asked, politely of course, for a free upgrade at check in? Is it common for people to ask if the ship is full and if not, to get an upgrade? I always try for first class when I fly but I guess I havent asked politely enough yet.

I just wanted to add that I always ask when I fly too - But I guess I am not polite enough either - But everyone I know seems to be able to get one!! Let me know the secret when you do!

You can't really ask for a FREE upgrade at check-in. If you want an upgrade they will politely direct you to the supervisor's line where you can purchase an upgrade, if available. The only kinds of free upgrades given at the port are those that have been done by DCL, at their discretion.
