Has anybody heard...

See, that's a good example of the way people see or read something and take it out of context. Until you posted "people in the lower tax brackets" I would have sworn you were going to say "black people" instead. The quote "They think that they won't have to work after the election. They don't mince words. They actually say they won't have to work" sounds a whole lot like racial stereotyping that has been common in the past.

I had heard it on the radio.:confused3 I didn't know what race she was. I just figured she was someone expecting to get a free ride. Obama's plan would supposedly help lower income families, I never heard him say it would only help one race and not another.:flower3:

I suspect these stories, in general, are a mix of people who are truly clueless and politically-motivate fabrications.

That's a good point: People who aren't used to public speaking (like most of us) something say thing even out of context with their own perspective. They express a partial thought, assuming that the listener(s) will understand the rest is assumed.

People in the lower tax brackets. Who did you think? Did I miss something?

I have a friend who has worked in the Post Office for many, many years.. Believe me, on her salary she doesn't need Obama or anyone else to help her make ends meet.. She does very, very well - even without the mandatory overtime.. And even at 70 years of age has no intentions of retiring any time soon.. ;)

Sorry... it didn't sound to me that she thought she would get free gas or her mortgage paid.

It sounded like me that she thought Obama would fix the economy.

I guess people will hear what they want to hear

This last sentence pretty well sums it up..

well I HAVE heard that many times over the past few times....standing in lines BUYING my food while the person in front of be brags about how much more she will be getting in her check each month after a (her words not mine) brother is POTUS! I guess she thinks obama is her brother lol no really it is crazy....I dont care what color he is, I vote republican if he wins oh well but people cant say there are not people out there who think they will be on the gravy train just because obama is in office...there are plenty BUT I really dont think it will make it better for them thats the funny thing...The lady in front of me scamming food stamps does not really need to worry about paying mortagage anyway.Yes i said scamming, when you are holding a 500.00 handbag and getting welfare your scamming...

You know, you sure have this stranger pegged. This $500 purse could have been a gift, a purse that she purchased when her financial situation was better, she could have borrowed it from someone and yes it could have been one she purchased while receiving public assistance (a scam as you stated). The truth is, you don’t know. It’s funny you looked at that woman and thought the worst of her - just because of a purse she carries. Arguably, that can tell more about you than it does about that woman with the $500 purse.

I think the media has a penchant for seeking out the DUMBEST people available to interview. Kinda like when a tornado rips thru a trailer park and they seek out the lady wearing a bathrobe with 2 teeth in her head and curlers in her hair.

It also could have been a $5 knock off. God knows I wouldn't know a $500 bag if it walked up and introced itself (and for $500, it better have the ability to DO that!). It also could have been the real thing bought at a thrift store.

I stood behind a woman once that I was pretty sure was on food stamps or some sort of assistance, (she paid with some sort of voucher). Know what she bought? Milk, cheese, cereal, chicken, and some veggies. The only "treat" on her belt was a single box of Twinkies. None of that "steak and lobster" I read about on the Dis so much.

I agree and I'm going to guess that the post office worker falls into that 'lower tax bracket' as well as many people in Alabama. So why would your friend say 'they' and not 'we'?
If the postal worker is making $250,000 a year, I'm making Dh fold his small business on Long Island and we're going to work for the post office.

He (my relative) knows that he(my relative) might see a break but not be able to quit his(my relative) job and become rich. "That's why I(me, the one who is writing this) said "they"(lower income families). I'm(me, the one who is writing this) trying to watch my(me again) pronouns so there will be no more confusion.:goodvibes

We discussed this last week when it first came out. Some felt the way most posters do on this thread so far, that she expected handouts -others (including me) felt she meant that an Obama presidency would help stabilize the economy and make her personal situation more stable, so that gas and mortgage costs would be more in line with what the middle class could afford..
That's how I took what she said. Not that I agree with her. Or don't. ;)

People see what they want to see.

I'm not even sure that some watched the clip before commenting and the assumptions made about this woman are troubling.

This is a woman who owns a home (notice, she said mortgage, not rent). I saw her as someone worrying about being able to pay her mortgage and for expensive gas and hoping that under Obama the economy would be better. :confused3

Maybe I'm an optimist, but when I read the post, I read "they" to mean the people he heard talking positively about Obama. Not black, white, rich or poor, just plain old Obama supporters. This election has led people to see racist remarks even when there aren't any. Its sad, because it paints good Americans who happen to disgree with Obama's policies as a seething bunch of racist pigs.

Wow, some people on here really ran with what that lady said & took it literally!
She said I won't have "to worry anymore", she didn't say she wouldn't have to pay her own way anymore!?:confused3
BTW she was really excited by Obama's inspiring words, holding a baby & had a microphone shoved in her face...please!!

I am always so amazed how how many people say "they have seen" or know someone who knows someone who buys these things on food stamps--I have never, ever witnessed anything of the sort. And I have been buying groceries every week for the past 25 years or so; you would think by now I would have seen it at least once. When I was little my parents ran a small community grocery store; and Mom says she's never witnessed such a thing either.

I get so tired of hearing how all the "low income people" are waiting around for a handout. I use to be "low income" and guess what? I worked for that income! I got government assistance, but I worked every day for 12-14 hours a day and a heck of a lot harder than I work now for a heck of a lot more pay.

Think what you want...I REALLY dont care but if I didnt see it on a daily basis I wouldnt jump to that...also the perfect fake nails, name brand clothes and pricey cell phone she was chatting on gave it away.I have nothing against people who really need help but WOW she must get ALOT of nice gifts if that is the case! I see it ALL the time and YES when we work for everything we get it gets a little OLD!! I KNOW what kind of person I am and very proud of it. oh by the way I didnt have to have her pegged I heard her BRAGGING on her cell phone...everyone standing there did.

You see this type of stuff every day? Wow!

I suppose no one really knows what she meant and I haven't heard anyone say that they went back and asked her, so to each thier own.

Yea, it's very clear from the video, she is saying, "I won't have to worry about putting gas in my car. I won't have to worry about paying my mortgage." The meaning is quite different from "I won't have to pay for gas in my car. I won't have to pay my mortgage."

I think the lady should have been cited for allowing her children to skip school.

In some areas (like where I live) the schools are used as polling places so the children don't have school. So she may have taken her children in with her so they could see how you vote.

I guess I'm in my own little world (or reading the front covers of all the smut magazines at the checkout :teeth: ) because I never notice what anyone else is buying, or how they're paying. :confused3

This confuses me even more. How does a postal worker know which customers are in the lower tax brackets? Do they show them their tax returns or W-2's before buying stamps? ;)
