Harry Potter Question

In the Harry Potter books, everyone looks up to the school's head boy and head girl and dreams of one day being head boy or head girl. Can someone tell me what exactly the head boy and girl do in British schools and how are they selected? I'm assuming it has to do with good grades, behavior, etc., but do they have a real role in the school?

PUPILS LEARN RESPONSIBILITY

The school operates a prefect system so that several senior pupils hold positions of authority. There is a Head Boy and a Head Girl, and a house system in which children at all class levels are placed. Points are gained by the pupils within the House through their efforts in school work, success in sports, and showing care and consideration for others.

So, it is real...I just can't find out how they are chosen...
