Harry Potter - FJ motion?

Hi,

Just curious about the "motion" on FJ. I've read threads that talk about some getting motion sickness from the ride. Is it the ride itself? Is it a 3D effect / simulator portion of the ride that does it? Does it spin a lot?

It sounds great overall, but I can't do the spinning stuff or the 3D/simulator rides too well. So just trying to get a feel for what the "cause" would be.

Thanks.

It is like a motion simulator but with more motion. Like you, DH can't do spinning rides or the 3d/motion simulator rides due to motion sickness. He rode FJ with us once and was ok but he chose to skip the next 3 or 4 times the kids and I rode it.

It is probably a bit of both. The ride is basically a set of 4 seats on the end of a long arm, so imagine a child shaking a toy in its hand and you will get an idea of how the ride moves. It can tip almost all the way down or up, as well as back and forth. Plus the ride puts a big movie screen right in front of you showing a movie with dips, swoops, and twists while you are tipped along with the apparent motion, much more so than with Soarin' or some other similar ride. So there are -definitely- some motion sickness inducing moments, but since they intercut them with real world animatronic action most folk can recover, though the ride is never still (plus it hits on the fear of REAL THINGS grabbing you, which is a strong phobia for some folks as well). It is intense, much more like a looping dropping rollercoaster such as Hulk or Aerosmith than a shaky platform ride like the Dinosaur one at AK or the Mummy.

Only thing to add to the above is that you don't get that feeling in your tummy that folks nornally get on roller coasters. (that empty feeling when you drop).

It really isn't like anything else. You almost have to try it to see if you like it. However, if other simulators upset your stomach FJ may not be for you. I still say try... but don't have your Butterbeer until after! :thumbsup2

It gave my husband a headache. The 2nd time he rode it he just closed his eyes when he felt dizzy......

The ride is a mixture of simulator parts and real animatronics. I find that if I close my eyes during the middle simulator sequence (quidditch) I am not motion sick at all. I also think that if the vehicles weren't so close to the action, the ride might not be so nausea inducing.

This is good to know, thanks! We're going next week, and I tend to get motion sickness, so I may just take some medicine that morning to try and prevent it and hope for the best!

Make sure you give the medicine enough time to work. Taking it the night before might be a better idea, if you plan on riding the ride in the morning.

I was worried about this as well when we went, but sadly, the motion sickness meds didn't do anything.
I had taken them the day before, and again in the morning before going to US, but it still made me sick. The first time, I closed my eyes when the simulator stuff came, too fast, and too blurry, and it wasn't too bad. The second time I wanted to see what I missed, kept my eyes open, and it made me really sick. So try it, but be prepared to miss a lot of FJ with your eyes closed. :)
DD15 had the same problem.

Soarin never bothers me.

damo, do you just take it the night before and nothing in the morning? I just bought some of the less drowsy dramamine (I didn't see a non-drowsy) and it says to take it once a day. So if we take it the night before should we be good all the next day? I realize everyone is different, but with it saying once a day I am thinking we shouldn't take it again in the morning. Although it does say 1-2 tablets. How many do you take?

HMMMM...was wondering the same thing. I took the "less drowsy" version in Maui once and pretty much snoozed through the entire road to Hana! LOL!

thanks for the replies/descriptions! Appreciate it. I was ok on Soarin. I'll have to make a gametime decision I suppose. Guess it will depend on how I feel overall at that time. I don't mind closing my eyes in parts to avoid dizziness, but just didn't to have to do it the whole ride.

Thanks again.

I've ridden it 9 times, and the way I described it to my sister is that it basically feels like you're being tossed around Hogwarts by your ankles. I don't have motion sickness problems at all, so I thought it was great, but I thought the non-simulator parts where you're dodging spiders and dementors and the Whomping Willow were pretty wild. The bench moves in just about every possible direction and you can't see where it's going. (again, I loved it!)

I don't feel that it is comparable to Soarin'. Your seat doesn't really move in Soarin'.

Hi!

Just rode this yesterday. It is pretty intense. The motion if this is so different than anything else.... you're tossed left then right, then forwards, then backwards, then you're whipped around in a circle.....then everything repeats. I absolutely got motion-sick on this. I am glad I read this thread ahead of time though, and I closed my eyes during the Quiddich scene. Only the parts with the screen seemed to really mess me up.

I agree with PP, it is NOTHING like Soarin'

The kids had me on the ride about 15 times. I got nauseous on it probably about 5 times.

My few tips for you would be to experience the queue at least once, but then after that, go through the single rider line so you don't have any wait. Also, if you have bags that need to go into the lockers, go through Filch's to get to the lockers so you don't have to stand in the long lines.

Also, since you may be there for only 1 day, don't miss all of the details. For example, in one of the 2nd floor windows there is a music shop. Every few minutes the instruments move and the sheet music flies all over the place. Also, in one of the gift shops (I think it's Dervish & Banges) there is a sign near the cashier's table. It has the closing procedures for the store. It includes things like "Don't forget to lock up the Monster Book of Monstors, you remember what happened last time..." or something like that. In a window in Zonkos (or HoneyDukes) there are 2 chess pieces playing wizard's chess. One of the pieces attacks the other one.

You will have an amazing time!!!

so I'm thinking it's more intese than the Simpsons? It makes me a little queasy so I don't know about this one!

When I am cruising, I get the patch from my doctor however; it gave me really bad blurry vision last cruise. On the boat, they gave me a pill (mezcalain or something like that), I asked if it was likje draminine as it makes me tired, they said no. Pill was great, no sickness, no drowsiness etc. Not sure if they sell it over the counter but I would look into it.

Meclizine is over the counter and easy to get and cheap. Some people take it all the time.

The scopalamine patch is great but it causes me to have permanently dilated pupils (blurry vision) and also causes psychodelic dreams and sleep walking and sleep talking! these were my personal experiences with the drug. The other thing was I had to be very careful about hand washing when applying the patch. I wear contacts and if I still had the drug on my hands it caused intense eye pain! I wonder if anyone has tried the pressure point wristbands.....
