Harry Potter fans... What's a Squib, and another question!

In the beginning of the 5th book. Mrs Figg says she's a squib, I don't remember what that was. And any experts out there on book 4??? When did Dumbledore talk about Arabella Fig? I just want to go back and read that.

A squib is someone who has wizarding parents, but is not a wizard or witch.

I think Dumbledore mentions her at the end of book 4.

And what's an Auror? I read the other books so long ago, I can't keep up with all the terminology.

I'm not sure of the exact definition of an Auror, but I think it is a wizard/witch who is trained specifically to fight bad wizards. Not sure if they have special gifts something.

Hopefully someone else can be more specific!

A squib is sort of the opposite of a Muggle-born witch like Hermione - their abilities don't follow their genes. Argus Filch (Hogwarts caretaker) is also a squib, and Neville Longbottom has said that he's "almost a squib" because he has to struggle so hard to work magic.

At the end of Goblet of Fire, Dumbledore tells the Weasleys and Sirius Black they they'll need to gather "the old crowd," one of whom is Arabella Figg. Mrs. Figg is also mentioned in Sorcerer's Stone as the old woman with lots of cats who babysits Harry when the Dursleys want to go somewhere without him. Personally, I thought she was going to turn out to be Harry's Secret Keeper, so I was pleasantly surprised at the squib turn of events.

An auror is a witch or wizard who catches evil witches and wizards. Mad Eye Moody is an auror, as were Frank and ??(Neville's mom) Longbottom. They don't necessarily have any special powers, they just have to be very, very competent at magic (especially Potions, Charms, and Transfiguration) and receive three years of additional schooling after leaving Hogwarts.
