Harriet Miers withdraws nomination

Funny you should mention Arlen Spector. It was the rightwing Republicans who tried to prevent Spector from assuming the Chairmanship of the Justice Committee.

Now, if Bush had half a brain, and less Johnny Walker, he'd nominate Spector for the Supreme Court.

However, Bush is Bush and it will never happen.

Spector is one of the vanishing breed of elected moderate Republicans. They can no longer exist in large numbers, and I suspect can only win elections, except in blue states. Shame.

I watched Alan Simpson, the former Republican Senator from Wyoming, and it was like a breath of fresh air. When asked about abortion, he said it's woman's business and he didn't believe male legislators should be discussing or voting on it. Barry Goldwater felt the same way.

When the hell did being a conservative Republican go from Goldwater/Simpson to Sponge Dob(son) land?

You will find that America is more conservative than you give it credit for. :rotfl2:
Actually, America is an extremely liberal country in most aspects. Democracy, the rule of law, innocent-until-proven-guilty and personal liberties are all very much left wing traits. Granted, America is more conservative than the average Western nation, but all in all liberal values rule your lives already.

These people are so far out of the mainstream, they wouldn't know the middle if it was a snake and bit them in the ***. Fact is, mainstream America favors abortion rights, social security, universal healthcare, etc.

And remember, when the rightwing talks about Democrats as leftwing extremists, the ones the doing the talking support a president who felt the need to consult the far rightwing religious like Sponge Dob(son) on a Supreme Court nominee.

I don't think JFK felt the need to run an appointee past Cardinal Cushing, but Bush genuflected Sponge Dob(son's) way.

And the kicker is Bush got screwed by his own base. :rotfl2:

Dawn, I think you are confusing anything that comes out of a Democrat's mouth as "far left". In my observations, my party is slowly moving to the right every election period. Just who do you consider the "leader" of my party? Ted Kennedy? While he is certainly the last bastion of the old school liberals, he certainly isn't the leader. Maybe in the past, but not today. I think my party's various spokesmen and women come across as being on the moderate side. Maybe you just have to be a Dem to look at it fairly. Speaking for myself, I think the litmus test is "any Republican that still calls Bill Clinton a liberal, just doesn't understand our party".
Please, common sense doesn't seem to be one of the right wing's qualities in this arena. Rush Limbaugh has been calling every Dem, as well as Republicans like John McCain and Olympia Snowe, "Liberals" for so long, they've lost touch with it's meaning.

If any of them think that Michael Moore is Democratic mainstream, they should read a little bit of what he has wriiten. He has gone on record as saying that he wasn't crazy about Bill Clinton, that he was the greatest Republican President of all time based on his work on NAFTA, Welfare reform, tax breaks for corporate interests, faith based initiatives, etc. so somehow, Rush Limbaugh's "Liberal" Clinton is Michael Moore's "Conservative" President.

I enjoy reading Moore's books, and think he has a great sense of humor, but he definitely not the voice of the party, unless you think that Pill-Poppin' Daddy is the voice of the Republicans.
