Harriet Miers withdraws nomination

Gee that's good. I hope Michael Brown isn't the next one up for the position. I understand he's looking for a job.

Hell no, Brown isn't looking for a job.

Incredibly, he's still collecting a paycheck from the American taxpayer.

Heck of job, Brownie, where do I find one just like it?

Or as the folks in my neighborhood in Brooklyn used to say: He's doing a job all right.

Seems to me like it was more conservatives being against Miers, not democrats. Heck, the woman had given money to Al Gore...how bad could she really be for you guys. Miers is withdrawing her nomination b/c she doesn't have the backing of conservatives (for good reason), not because there were so many liberals against her. I am sighing a sigh of relief because of this nomination...not for the reasons most of you are.

If the president learns anything from this, he will nominate a more clearly conservative candidate that conservatives will rally around. Judge Janice Brown please!

I totally agree. I worked my butt off for the Bush Campaign last year, for the main reason that I thought he would appoint conservative canditates to the Supreme court. The Miers nomination was totally disheartening for me, I felt cheated and lied to.

Judge Brown's nomination would never be voted on. President Bush has to nominate someone who does not alienate either side of the aisle -- a tricky proposition. Otherwise, all we'll hear about for the next 3 years is filibusters (or threats thereof, since no one actually "filibusters" anymore).

Bush is in deep doo-doo politically. He's dead in the water. He doesn't have anymore political capital, not that he ever had much.

Given Bush's current political circumstances, unless he is an absolute out-of-touch moron or there's a chemical/liquid substance working, which isn't out of the realm of possiblities for Bush, he is not going to appoint someone so controversial that his own party will tell him to stick this nomination up his wazoo too.

It wasn't the press or the "desperate left" that caused the problems for Harriet Miers. Bush, by nominating someone so unqualified, and his party caused the problems for Harriet Miers.

Honestly, I feel sorry for Harriet Miers. She appeared to be a nice lady who did job well as Bush's attorney, and then she gets "bushwacked" as a reward for her years of service.

Yeah, the Left is real desparate....in your mind, perhaps, but not in reality. As each day of the Republican circus goes by, I feel better and better about the Left's chances in 2006. The beautiful thing is, our representation doesn't have to do anything but sit on the sidelines and watch the right kill itself slowly.

I have my own theory about the Miers nomination. It seems like it was set up to fail from the start.

It's almost like the Democrats have been itching for a fight against a SC nomination. That they were like sharks circling and waiting for their prey.

So Bush gave them some, in the form of Harriet Miers.

Not to diminish her legal skills and knowledge, but what I've read of her bio doesn't suggest a strong Constitutional scholar.

Of course, he also upset the far right in the process.

Miers is nominated with the intention that she will either not be confirmed or will end up withdrawing her nomination before the hearings. The Democrats have fought back and won, but like Ali and the rope-a-dope, Bush fights back harder with his counterpunch.

Of course, I could be waaaaay off on this theory.

Boy, if that were true, talk about a serious disregard for the office of President of the United State and the nomination process of a Associate Supreme Court Justice!!
The more plausable theory is that Bush took his base for granted and his callous disregard for those who voted him into office just came back to bite him in the a**!

Don't worry. There is a litmus test and it's not going away.

Hopefully the balance the govenment is supposed to represent will keep some sense in the system.

I don't see that, much as I would like to. Nothing would rally the fringe base in this time of indictments like a fight to get an extremist like JR Brown in. Her view are ahistoric and intellectually indefensible, but she abounds in the one quality that most animate that fringe - loathing and animus towards the other side, and the willingness to weild power accordingly.

The judicial activism of late, within any legitimate definition of the term, is all from the Right. Many weild the term without any firm understanding of its implications, but that is undeniable
