Harriet Miers withdraws nomination

You know, I didn't hear the majority of whining coming from any Democrats over this nomination. The radical right tanked Miers all on their own.

You're right. The left isn't whining. They're celebrating the fact that the "radical right" are eating their own. But once they recover from the hangover, they're gonna realize that the next nomination will be insert name of "radical right" idealogue here.

Looking into my own crystal ball, I hear the words "I wish Harriet Miers was still here instead". And they won't be coming from the mouths of Republicans.

Bring it on!

Bush is not running for re-election, but every Congressman and 1/3 of the Senate is.

Mainstream no longer supports the Bush administration.

Reality politics is, if a Republican wants to get elected, they need the mainstream and you don't appeal to the mainstream by checking to see if your nominee passes the Sponge Dob(son) test.

Remembe last year's campaign: do you want Jerry Falwell picking the next Supreme Court nominee's? Apparently, Bush prefers Sponge Dob(son).

Although I didn't trust Harriet Miers as far as I could throw her, she at least wasn't publically a right wing radical, so I had a glimmer of hope she wasn't going to bed down with Scalia and Thomas. The next one probably will. I, for one, was very disappointed to hear this mornings news.

Mainstream doesn't need to. Bush is not running for re-election. I remember reading that somewhere.

Isn't that what a Democrat does to get elected also? Appeal to the mainstream? Are you saying the current Democratic leaders do not appeal to the mainstream? Interesting.

No.

Unfortunately for the Democrats, MoveOn.org is what you consider the mainstream. You will find that America is more conservative than you give it credit for. :rotfl2:

I'm a Dem and don't consider Moveon.org to be mainstream at all. I also live in an extremely conservative state where moderate Republicans are leaving the party right and left (mainly left;)). Just yesterday our District Attorney (elected for 20 years as a Republican) announced that he is going to switch to the Democratic Party and run for the Kansas Attorney General's office against the conservative Republican incumbent. Because of the rift in the GOP, our mainly Republican state has a Democratic governor and US Congressman. You will find that most fiscal conservatives aren't buying the right-wing rhetoric on social issues.

That's a big problem, imho, with the Republican party. Why they assume all Democrats are flaming liberals is beyond me. Come election time, the first words out of the elephants is "liberal"!!!! with a pointing finger. Give it a rest! There are plenty of moderate Dems out there, both candidates and voters.

All Democrats are not liberals and all Republicans are not conservatives. I wonder how those labels became synonymous anyway. :confused3

Back in the 60's and 70's there were actually some liberal Republicans! We had some here in N.Y. And to be fair (before a righty posts to complain) we Dems do the same thing to a certain extent to the Republicans, blanketing them with conservatisim. Although in our defense, a moderate Democrat candidate is a lot easier to find in this country than a moderate Republican, although I'm sure there are a lot of moderate voters.

I don't get it either. I am a registered Democrat because of the issues of most importance to me are more likely to be espoused by Dems than Republicans. However I am really not liberal except for social issues. Every political test I take puts me at Libertarian.

Unfortunately, the mouth pieces of the Democratic party are alligning themselves with the far left. You don't need to worry about how the Republicans lable you. Take a look at who the leaders in your party, nationally, alligned themselves with.

Jenn, that's interesting because in political tests I come out pretty close to Liberterian, too, but I identify more with Republicans (except when I'm watching the West Wing and then I become a Democrat!). My DW saids I am just politically schizophrenic! :rotfl:

Thanks... I knew someone would answer my question (How did those labels become synonymous?).

Dawn, I think you are confusing anything that comes out of a Democrat's mouth as "far left". In my observations, my party is slowly moving to the right every election period. Just who do you consider the "leader" of my party? Ted Kennedy? While he is certainly the last bastion of the old school liberals, he certainly isn't the leader. Maybe in the past, but not today. I think my party's various spokesmen and women come across as being on the moderate side. Maybe you just have to be a Dem to look at it fairly. Speaking for myself, I think the litmus test is "any Republican that still calls Bill Clinton a liberal, just doesn't understand our party".

This in an intervention. Turn off Pill-Popping Daddy Limbaugh, Sean Insanity, Anthrax Coulter, etc.

And the alignment between Sponge Dob(son) and the Bush WH is what? Facts are facts: The Bush WH felt the need to call the rightwing religious over the Harriet Miers nomination.

It's a real kick in the head that it was the rightwing who torpedoed Miers. Bush got screwed by his base.

Now, that deserves a laugh :rotfl2: and a drink. :drinking1

Funny you should mention Arlen Spector. It was the rightwing Republicans who tried to prevent Spector from assuming the Chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee.

Now, if Bush had half a brain, and less Johnny Walker, he'd nominate Spector for the Supreme Court.

However, Bush is Bush and it will never happen.
