Hard time deciding when to purchase

Yeah, that's what I'm telling myself. Or that the money I save in not paying dues between now and purchase will even out any loss in worse incentives.

My husband keeps going back and forth on whether or not he wants to by between now and May THIS year to get that extra year of points or just wait until sometime after June. I think I'm fine either way so I'll likely just wait until he seems amped to purchase.

I know it makes the most sense to purchase at the END of a use year. But I think there's a slightly elevated chance of him wanting to pull the trigger on the points while we're actually at Disneyland this summer. We definitely have plans to walk over to the Disneyland hotel again. At the very least, I want to show our son the Big Thunder model in the Frontier tower because I think he'd really like that. I may also ask to tour the 1-bedroom at VDH again because why not?

Large $ purchases take a lot of planning, but I wouldn't buy anything a year or two before I needed it. If you don't mind dealing with renting out your points, you could go that route. It might be possible to transfer your points to another member. It's against the rules to ask for money for transfers, but people do that every day and they don't even try to hide it.

If you're still on the fence about which resort, I suspect VGC going on sale next month will help you decide. Either you'll be excited to buy VGC direct, you'll realize that buying direct is overpriced or you'll realize that you want VDH.

I haven't heard anything about VGC going on sale next month. Is there a thread about it? I'll have to go look. I don't often look through new threads on the DVC section but I probably should.

That said, I can't see myself buying VGC direct unless it was HEAVILY discounted.

If VGC and VDH were the exact same price direct? Then yes, I would probably go with VGC. But I don't think we'll ever see it at VDH prices, unfortunately.

There is another VGC resale available now that is "almost" a perfect fit if we want more VGC resale instead of direct VDH. That's the second one in the last week or so that has popped up.

I think the fact that neither me nor my husband want to jump on those is a bit telling on where our heads are at currently.

Here was one comment about the 6,000 points that will supposedly be available for VGC. No mention of any incentive for those. https://www.disboards.com/threads/vdh-questions-for-purchasing.3977629/page-72#post-66528794

They will be selling 6000 points in the June UY. No incentives.

If we for sure want VDH, purchasing when we're at disneyland in June might be a good idea. Then in July, we could actually book VDH for our summer 2027 trip. We could still sell back all 2026 points for MB. And we'd use all of the 2027 points plus borrow some 2028. The rest of 2028 points would bank into 2029 for our next VDH visit then. It would put us in a nice pattern of a combo of bank/current/borrow points for each trip. So we wouldn't be as likely to fall short or have an excess of points any year.

Doing this would give us 77 points from VGC (2026 points, unused) that we'd need to rent out or use towards upgrading a BRV stay to a 2-bedroom that year, which would be nice. (If we bank 77 VGC points into 2027, they can be used at BRV right? Even though they were banked?)

And this alternating between the two resorts would mean our 2032 trip would be at VGC...which I'd prefer since that would be our son's "graduation trip" and I'm sure VGC will always be our favorite.

I could understand it for a small contract, but for a large contract at that price I have a hard time seeing the benefit over resale because it might as well have the same restrictions as a resold RIV.

Yeah...we would want 75-100 points if we went with more VGC. Which would be $24,750 - $33,000. I'm not sure that would make sense for us over VDH. Especially since it wouldn't be enough for direct benefits, whereas if we go with VDH, we'd actually want more points.

I mean, 160 VDH would obviously be more expensive, longterm, than 75-100 at VGC. But if I'm spending another 30k on points, I feel like I'll want some direct benefits.

I recently bought 50 direct at VGC. Not really sure why, I think I just got tired of waiting for a resale to show up!

Yeah like for that little amount when resale for a 50 pointer costs 300 and it's in the right use year and then no restrictions, direct makes sense. But for a 200 pointer that you can probably get down to 240 if you time it right ehhh.

I have to say it felt really cool to get VGC direct 😎

A fool and his money, etc.

Yes, but at 7 months. Also if you make a reservation at 11 with your BRV points, before 7 months, they won't combine the reservation with non home points after 7 months. You'd need to cancel and rebook.

I bought 65 - great minds! My logic was that while I intended to use those points exclusively at VGC, in the event that I had a few leftover that I couldn’t bank I’d be annoyed not to be able to combine with RIV.

Good to know, thanks. I didn't know I couldn't just modify it from a 1-bedroom to a 2-bedroom with those points at the 7 month mark. (It looks like 2-bedrooms are fairly easy to get at BRV in January.)

Sorry I wasn't specific. If you're changing from a 1BR to a 2BR, I'm not sure. You might be able to do that. What I'm confident you couldn't do is book 5 nights in a 1BR at 11 months, then come back at 7 months and try to modify to add 3 more nights with the non home resort points.
