We have changed our vacation from the Gulf, too worried about the oil, to Harbor Island, SC. We have never been there but it looks very nice and RELAXING. Are there any budget friendly places or things we should not miss. If you have been there any info would be appreciated

We went there last year. It was very relaxing...although there isn't much in the way of "activities" to do, although that makes it very budget friendly. We spent a lot of time on the beach. We also had what is apparently the only house on the island with a private pool, so we spent a lot of time there too. There is a clubhouse with a pool you can go to.

Harbor Island is a private community and that is pretty much all there is to the island. We went to town for dinner once and we spent a lot of time at the park on the next island over...the name is escaping me right now, but there is a lighthouse, beach area, etc.

One word of caution...it was VERY buggy. We used a lot of Off while we were there.

Where is it? I have lived in Charleston my whole life and have never heard of it...:confused3

I had to check out this thread too, as I've never heard of Harbor Island either. What's it near?

We own a condo on Fripp Island, which is just down the road from Harbor.

Great places to eat that are very close include Boondocks, Shrimp Shack and Johnson Creek Tavern. There's a new place -- The Foolish Frog (I think that's the name)-- that's getting great reviews, but we've never been there.

It's fun to spend an afternoon in Beaufort exploring the shops. Plums is a wonderful sandwich shop with delicious ice cream.

One thing to know about Harbor -- it's on the inlet more than the ocean, so there are no waves. That's why we bought on Fripp -- lots of waves to play in all day.

Have fun. We're heading back to to our Fripp condo next month and can't wait.

Harbor Island and Fripp Island are just off of Beauford, SC. Both look very relaxing which we love. We also looked at Fripp, but after loosing our $200 deposit in Panama City Beach and booking so late into the season, most of the ones at Fripp were booked, not beachfront or more than we wanted to pay for the bedrooms we needed. We are staying at Cedar Reef Villas, which based on the owner's info our unit is oceanfront in unit "D" and close to the Villas' pool. I hope she is accurate. She did let us know about there being very little waves, but we could go to the state park, she includes a pass, and get bigger waves. I looked more closly at the satallite map and it is located on St. Helena Sound rather than on the Atlantic, but it will work for this year.

Thanks for the resturant info and the "buggy" info. We'll make sure to take some spray now. Hopefully its what we are looking for and we'll have fun.

Anyone else got any more info?

My boss owns a second home on Harbor Island and has generously offered it to me a number of times. I guess I've been there 5 or 6 times. It is very remote and even in the middle of the summer, you can stand on the beach looking both directions and not see over 50 or so people (at least when I've been). When the tide goes out, it goes O....U.....T......truly unbelievable - looks like how they describe a tsunami before it comes back on shore! Most of the actual homes provide golf carts to get around on the island and I think that is a lot of fun.

Hunting Island State Park is only a mile down the road and it does have some good waves - very mosquitoey(sp?) though.

Beaufort and Port Royal are both quaint little towns.

All in all, a very laid-back place. If you're not looking for lots of entertainment, I think you'll enjoy it.
