Have you had yours today yet?? Luckily, I don't really care for them so it doesn't bother me...plus it doesn't go with my "diet". Just talked to a couple of my friends at work and they have had their share already!!

Our newspaper deliverer is the local "Paczki Eating Champion"!!

I am staying away from the stores today so I don't bring home a box of those - they beckon to me every year and I luv 'em.

DH's mom ususally makes them. I don't know if she did or not.
They are kind of like donut holes with a filling. Traditional fillings are prune and apricot.

Those sound yummy. I've never heard of them before. Are they a northern tradition?

I've never heard of Paczkis. I don't think it's a Northern tradition, per se, as I'm from PA and never heard of them!

BUT, in Allentown, PA (my hometown), today is Faschnacht (sp?) Day, which means Fast Night in German/PA Dutch. It's a big DONUT day in Allentown, and all of the bakeries are loaded up with them as everyone brings in boxes and boxes of them to work!

Guess when I've been to New Orleans I've been too obsessed with beignets to try the paczkis? Anyone know if it is just a Mardi Gras/seasonal thing?

Hey Merry!

Yes, paczkis are traditional to the Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday. They are a way to use up the fat (probably lard originally) and eggs, and other goodies that are to be fasted from during Lent.

I have never eaten any, only read about them. So perhaps someone else can clarify or correct me. :)

Hey, we do Shrove Tuesday here in Oklahoma, too. So why do we not have yummy paczkis? We usually have a lot of pancake suppers around town. Maybe I need to find a recipe and start a new tradition? These sound better than old pancakes! LOL!

A VERY big day here in Chicago. Chicago has the largest Polish population in the world, outside of Warsaw. It was a state holiday here yesterday, Pulaski Day.

Thanks for the recipe. I guess I've never heard of them because we don't have a large Polish population. They sound great! I love Polish foods, so I may have to give this a try sometime.

Boy do I miss them. I haven't lived in Michigan for 13 years, and all they have down here is King Cakes. My mom always went to the Polish bakery and got them for us. YUM!

I went to the market here in FAT WAYNE, and was thrilled to find paczki!:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc
I bought 2 boxes, and was going to surprize DH. We just couldn't wait, and dove straight in. YUCK! YUCK! EEEW! They were so disgusting! Not to mention $4.00/box! They were like bricks filled with jello! I REALLY don't like it here. I'm going HOME on Thursday (Ann Arbor, MI), hoping that my family may have some left over. Wish me luck!

Now I know all you WISH buddies are thinking I'm not Keeping the Faith, but Paczki is just that! Faith.

Yummy! Cant wait 'til Thursday! :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc  :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

For those of you who feel you are missing out...YES, taste wise you are, but I hear there are about 420 calories (& about the same amount of FAT grams) in each one!

My mom & I split a delicious lemon & a strawberry (pronounced) "poonch-key" or I've heard people call them "punch-key." So in other words, we each had a WHOLE one but we got to try 2 diff flavors. :pinkbounc

They are HUGE jelly filled donuts ~ sort of ~ only MUCH tastier!! :p

My Foodtown grocery store makes the prune donuts in their on-site bakery. They are sooo good.

I never really liked paczkis either. Lucky for me, they look like lots of sugar.

Happy paczki Day, Lisa.
