Liz, here is the story of Hanukkah
Hanukkah
In my house, we have a big dinner usually the first and last nights. My mother still buys presents for all of us and every night we open 1 present. On the last night, we usually have extra presents left over, so we open all of the rest. Right now my dad is frying up some potato latkes, which is a Hanukkah tradition. Latkes are also known as potato pancakes. We didn't have a big dinner last night, as we are having all our friends over tonight. My mom is cooking a big dinner. YUM!
When we were younger we played dreidel, which is kind of like a gambling game (as my gambler ex told me). You spin the dreidel and see what it lands on. There are four sides to the dreidel. On each of the 4 sides is a Hebrew letter. Each letter corresponds to an action.
Also every night, we light out menorahs. There are 8 candle holders and 1 Shamash holder. We use the Shamash to light all of the other candles. On the first night, we light one, on the second, two, and so on. We also say a prayer when we light the candles.
I'm pretty sure that covers it. If you have any more questions, let me know!
SHIN, HEY, GIMEL, NUN
They translate to "A Great Miracle Happened There"
Shin-Put One in (usually a penny or an M&M)
Hey-Take half of the pot
Gimel-Take all
Nun-Nothing
