Happy Feet beats Cars???? Um.....NO!

I will be a pseudo-disenter. I was not thrilled with Cars. I have enjoyed Pixar movies greatly, THis one did not hold my interest. My son (13 and still loves PIXAR) was non plussed as well.

Now mind you, I was disapointed in Happy Feet. I enjoyed the visuals, but the movie itself dragged. I was ok with the enviromental message, but inserting a religious one was creepy (and I happen to agree with the point of the message).

How come Ice Age 2, Over the Hedge, or Flushed Away wherent nominated. I liked those more than the ones that where nominated.

I'm glad "Happy Feet" won. Not because it was a great movie because I didn't see it. But because it beat "Cars". Until Disney/Pixar can produce a film in the spirit of...Disney, I will root for anything to beat Disney. There are some (many) people who will disagree with me, and probably flame me for this, but if you "fans" won't admit it, at least the Academy will keep it real.

Disney doesn't deserve awards just because they are Disney. And you people who talk about "this year must have been a message year" or "it was a green year". Give me a break! The truth is these movies suck, and you all act like Disney should automatically get an Oscar because they produce a film that makes a couple hundred million.

The Academy rewards film for quality. Not for popularity or name. Only 2 Disney/Pixar films have won the Best Animated Feature Film award since the category was created 6 years ago. That means more Disney/Pixar films have lost than won. Monster's Inc, Lilo & Stitch, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, Cars...ALL LOSERS! Only Finding Nemo and The Incredibles have won this Oscar, and in my opinion, those were bad years.

I'd like to thank the Academy for being consistent and not selling out to big name, over-hyped, Disney films. Bring back the quality of Disney's great films like Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, The Lion King and Peter Pan and make them actually earn their awards.

Anyone else think if Cars ran on ethanol it would have won?? ;)

Really?

And you do you think that Melissa Etheridge's "I need to wake up" was a better quality song than any of the three Dreamgirls songs?

I think the Dreamgirls' vote was split three ways.
I didn't care much for Cars. I liked it somewhat better when it was called "Doc Hollywood" and starred Michael J. Fox, but Happy Feet touched my heart.

Dreamgirls was a great film and I'm glad Jennifer Hudson won. I would assume by your question that you were unhappy that Dreamgirls didn't win Best Song. Correct?

I don't see many movies with over a PG rating so I don't feel I can really comment on Best movie or whatever. But I did see both Cars and Happy Feet. Happy Feet was advertised toward kids. It scared the dickens out of my DD7 and she doesn't frighten easily. If I had know how frightening the scenes were, we wouldn't have gone. And she was the one who wanted to see it. Cars kept the kids attention the entire movie. DS thought Happy Feet was ok but couldn't believe it beat Cars. I also thought "Happy" Feet was a misleading name, while he did dance a lot, the movie definitely wasn't happy.
And I wanted Veggie Tales to win an Oscar the year they put out Jonah - just so you don't think I want Disney to win everything. I wanted to see a small operation win a major award over Disney. I also don't think that Lilo & Stitch, Treasure Planet and Big Brother were Oscar worthy. But I do think Cars was robbed.

Nope...I don't really care which song won. I personally felt that Melissa Etheridge's song won ONLY because of the "green" feel of the Oscars last night (i.e. that popularity/name/politics was indeed more of a factor in that Oscar category than pure quality). And I believe that factor had some effect on the other categories as well.

Personally, I feel that if a specific category just doesn't have any quality nominees, then that category should be left out. I would say that perhaps in the category of Animated Feature...perhaps NONE were really Oscar worthy.

I haven't seen Happy Feet yet, but I sure did like Cars. I was disappointed it didn't win.

I don't think the Academy should have a Best Animated Feature Film category at all. The heyday of animation is long gone. Just because there are larger quantities of animated films doesn't mean they are Oscar worthy and deserve a category. Special Oscars for major achievement is fine. Otherwise, this is just a waste of time and gold. All of Walt Disney's animation oscars were for special achievements. They didn't have a category when he was around. There will probably never be another film like Beauty and the Beast that gets nominated for best picture. But even after that historic achievement, it was another decade before the animated feature category was created.

The best song cagegory usually goes to the BEST SONG. And many of these winners are singer/songwriters. I had never heard the Etheridge song prior to last night. I like James Taylor but don't like the Cars song. I liked the Dreamgirls songs, and did think they were the favorites. But I disagree that Melissa won the award because of the "green" feel of the show. That's just an excuse for those who disagree with the outcome of the show.

It's not an "excuse". I don't have a vested interest either way, so why would I need an excuse?

The only song I had heard prior to last night was the Cars song. I think fabshelly brought up an interesting point that the Dreamgirls songs split the vote amongst themselves.

However, to think that politics/popularity did not enter into the decisions of the Academy seems a little naive.

You're not the only person on this thread.

Who's naive here? "Cars" was easily the more popular film and it DIDN'T WIN!

Now we're splitting hairs. Time to move on.

The same can be said of any category. Just because a bunch of movies are made, doesn't mean they deserve to win anything. Did "The Departed" break any new ground? No. It wasn't even original. It was a remake of a Hong Kong film called "Infernal Affairs". They didn't have the animation award around during Disney's day because he was virtually the only one producing animated movies. No competition for the justification.
Just because you feel the "heyday" of animation is over does not make it so. Because there are larger quantities of of animated movies, better movies are being made. The people who produce animated movies deserve to be recognized for their talent and creativity just like their live action counterparts do.
You really don't think politics plays any part in the Academy Awards? Ever heard of a film called "How Green Was My Valley"? Probably not. It beat out "Citizen Kane" because of the politics of the time with Orson Wells. Or how about "Forest Gump" beating out "The Shawshank Redemption"? Politics play heavily in the Academy process. This year is was also Alan Arkin beating out Eddie Murphy because the Academy does not like Murphy. Even Arkin figured he got it because of his age. The Academy likes to make statements and this year was "It's easy being Green". Surprised they didn't have Kermit the Frog handing out Oscars.

Jenny:)

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I thought that was the FUNNIEST quote said here on this thread. ;)

Anyways, back to on topic.

I thought Cars, while the story was as weak as tea served in Don Pablos (aka orange colored water ;)), the animation was flawless.

Happy Feet was the complete opposite.. I could hand draw a Penguin better then they were CGI'ing it. BUT , The story was great . I even remember tearing up when Mummble was put into the zoos penguin house.

I Love Disney... but just because you slap a "Disney" logo on it, don't make it good... (Haunted Mansion movie anyone??)
