Happy Birthday Jonathan Larson!

Today he would have been 48 years old. He wrote RENT and Tick Tick..BOOM. He always loved musicals and playwrights. He was born in Westchester County. He had been suffering chest pains and nausea for several days, but doctors at St. Vincents Hospital could not find signs of a heart attack and so they thought it was either the flu or stress. He died on January 25th, 1996. I do believe that if the doctors took care of him, he would still be alive today. He was such an influence. RIP. Thank you Jonathan Larson.

So sad. Who knows what great musicals we've never experienced because of his death?

It could have been the doctor's who treated him for the chest pains (his death totally could have been prevented), but he was also believed to have an undiagnosed case of Marfan's syndrome which caused his aortic aneurysm, and he showed some of the symptoms from an early age. (long lanky arms, etc)

And btw: tick, tick...BOOM! is also an AMAZING musical. Like, seriously go to iTunes and download it. Louder Than Words is probably one of the best songs Jon's written. It's also interesting to hear the similarities between his two shows... 'No More' sounds a heck of a lot like 'Rent', for instance. (and Raul Esparza = love!)

If you want to hear Jonathan actually singing his songs, go buy or download 'Jonathan Sings Larson'. It's a cd of his demos, so it's him singing songs from Rent, TTB, Superbia (the other musical he wrote), and a few songs he wrote for his college cabarets and miscellaneous songs. He's not the best singer in the world, but it's very cool. And 'Valentine's Day' is a brilliant song. Oh, and if you buy the CD, it comes with a DVD of a video of Jonathan performing TTB as the one man show it was originally supposed to be. (And Roger Bart is his backup singer!)
