The Little Mermaid was released in theaters 20 years ago today and ushered in a new era of Disney animation!
So let's share your TLM memories...
I was 8 years old and highly anticipating the chance to see this movie. I remember seeing a sneak peak of "Under the Sea" on an entertainment news program. At the time, I still lived in Burbank, CA. My family went to see it in Hollywood at the Cineroma Dome. I remember waiting outside the theater for them to open the doors. When they told us they would open in a minute, I started counting to 60 over and over until they let us in. We finally entered, and it was the biggest movie theater I had ever seen. The seats were velvet green, and a curtain hung down over the screen that slowly lifted when it was time for the movie to begin.
I adored that movie from the very first moment. I was enchanted. And when I got the soundtrack for Hanukkah a little later, I wore that cassette out. The following year, it became the first movie I ever owned on VHS. (We usually just rented before that.)
Today, I claim Beauty and the Beast as my all time favorite Disney movie, but I will always have a soft spot for The Little Mermaid.
