Hi, I'm Kim. I've been keeping a pre-trip journal with the thought that it would then become my pretrip report for the blow-out, 13 night trip we're taking in May/June 2007. Except the thing has morphed into the size of a short novel. Since I doubt anyone wants to spend days reading my whole pretrip journal in one sitting, I thought I'd start posting bits at a time, 2 a week, until we leave on our trip. I'm a teacher, so when we've get back, I've got the whole summer stretching in front of me and nothing to do but write up the Happier'n a Tornado In a Trailer Park Grand Trip Report. :cool1:

So let's get started with my pretrip journal, with more to come every Sunday and Thursday...

I'm going to include an index, because I know it's going to get long, and I love my text features.

Part 1, An Introduction

When: May 28-June 9, 2007
Where: Port Orleans Riverside
Who: Read on...

I can't believe how excited I am to be writing a trip report again. I love to write, and I love to talk about myself. I am just such a fascinating person. :rotfl:

And of course, there's nothing better than having a rapt audience. Especially when that audience is comprised of people who are just as freaky about Disney as I am. :mickeyjum For me, half the fun of going to Disney is planning. The other half is writing the trip report. That whole being there stuff… that's just what you have to do to be able to write the trip report.

brermama.jpg

So let me introduce myself. I'm Kim, also known as Miss Kim if you're a digital scrapper or a blog reader. I have my own happy little blogwhere I post about my life. It's pretty digi-scrapping oriented, but I do the occasional holiday trip report, or rant about CSI, or post a recipe. It's *my* blog, so it's about whatever strikes my fancy. I'm a special ed teacher, have been for a decade now. I am fortunate to work about five minutes from home and I've just never been happier. Since I started working so close to home, I've lost over 50 pounds. Not sure if the happiness thing has anything to do with that, but all that extra time I used to spend driving is now spent working out. I flippin' love to exercise. I just put on some workout clothes, slip my little iPod shuffle in my bra and I'm off. Pretty funny to me, considering two years ago I was well over 200 pounds and exercising meant driving down to Sonic for a M&M Blast.

Oh man, I almost forgot my age (ha!). I'm 36. That's what my license says anyway. Inside, I feel like I'm in my twenties, so let's not tell my insides the truth. I love my girls' pop music, I have a crush on some cutie brothers who perform in Branson, and I'm wearing heels to work. Don't worry, I manage to act mature most of the time. You just don't want to catch me when I'm alone at home before I go to work... I can do a mean boogie while I'm blow drying my hair. :dancer:

I'm an uber-organized-to-the-point-of-being-annoying person. I keep two calendars… one by my home computer, one on my desk at work. I do lesson plans a week in advance, always. I get the shakes if it's Tuesday and I'm not ready for the following week. Never know when someone will get the stomach flu and I'll be out 2 or 3 days. Seriously, I plan for things like that. When I've got a Disney trip on the horizon, I get my little DisneyRunner of Knowledge out and going. OK, it's actually a Deluxe Passporter (notice that word "deluxe" there... I'm all the way classy), but you know it's just a Day Runner with a guide book inside, right? Except I pretty much remove all the guide book stuff. I keep the section on our resort, and the theme parks, and some of the dining stuff. The rest gets sprinkled around book cases as I remove it. Then I go to my beloved Tour Guide Mike website and print important information on 8.5x 5.5 sheets, punch holes and add them to my Passporter. Gotta know when to zig and when to zag.

dan.jpg

Then there's Dan. He's 38, and got a full head of gray hair. Not that the gray hair is important to this trip report. But when I start posting pictures, I don't want y'all thinking I'm married to Bill Clinton. Actually, Dan started getting his hair buzzed every few weeks because he was getting "You look like Clinton" comments too often.

Dan's a Schwans man. He likes watching sports of any kind (including poker... like that's a sport), watching movies, and acting like a kid. His memory is pretty poor. Or mine is exceptionally good. He has general memories of things -- like he remembers he likes POR -- but his detail memory sucks. Like he'd probably never remember that Chesney had her first Mickey bar at Epcot in searing heat outside The Land pavillon. I'm the detail person. He's pretty happy to follow my plans when it comes to Disney. Until he starts thinking he knows better than me. Then I'm going to have to shut him down. I know kick-boxing now, so it could get interesting.

We have 3 kids. And 3 cats and a dog. But the animals aren't coming with us.

tater.jpg

Our oldest is our only boy, and we'll just call him Tater. That's really what we call him. It's not his name, but my sister started it long before Ron White/Tater Salad was famous and it's stuck. He'll turn 13 just 2 days after we return from our trip. He's quite a child. Loves basketball and video games. Is scared to death of a lot of stuff (including bugs, Bratz hair, and driving through hills) and I've just gotten to the point where I laugh. He wants to be all brave and stuff, but he just can't do it. This trip is really for him. We go to water parks every year. My favorite is Typhoon Lagoon , and when we went in 2004, Brady was such a goof that he was afraid to go on anything. Then the following year, we went to White Water (in Branson, MO, which will probably be referenced multiple times during this report. We go to Branson at least yearly. Already been this year. Went 4 times last year. It's one of our 2 favorite vacation spots.) At White Water, Brady did the unthinkable. He rode every single ride. Even the steep drop speed slide. So we began to think that maybe this boy -- the one that was too afraid to ride the Magic Carpets in 04 because he was afraid we'd exceed the weight limit and crash our carpet and die -- was finally getting brave. And hey, if our kids are finally getting brave, it's time to go to Disney again. Except that it took a little longer to get here than I'd like, mostly because both Dan and I are freaky about budget and refused to take this trip on credit cards. So we had to save a bit.

kiah.jpg

Our middle child is Kiah. She's 11 and a complete preteen drama queen. I suppose it could be worse. She doesn't insist on certain labels on her clothes and she's only asked for a cell phone a couple of times. Most mornings, however, I wonder how we're going to survive the next 7 years. She's at the stage where she questions every decision I make. I really, really hate that. Probably because I know it's exactly what I did as a child. She's always been the one who would do the thrill rides with her dad. Not TOT or RNRRC, but she's done the coasters in Branson. She'll do just about anything once, but don't ask her to go again. And don't even mention going upside down. Just not gonna happen. She thinks she's me, and loves telling her brother and sister what to do. Which sometimes causes minor problems. Like the 3 of them beating each other up. I usually break it up. Unless I'm on the computer. Then I ignore them.

ches.jpg

Our baby (ha!) is Ches, and she's 7, with big front teeth and a huge grin. She's a reader -- reading 4th grade level books in 1st grade -- and she totally believes in magic. She was 4 on our last Disney trip, but she really doesn't remember much of it. I'm looking forward to showing it to her again. She has the greatest belly laugh and recently we've been watching Disney movies and she's just rolling. I never find them all that funny, but she just giggles until she can't stop. Her favorite Disney character at the moment is Mater. She also loves the moose (mooses?) from Brother Bear. And Stitch. :stitch2: This girl just loves comedy.

So that's us. We bought our plane tickets back in August, just as school was starting. One of my big gripes the last two years is that Dan prefers to split his 2 weeks of vacation per summer into 2 separate weeks. Since I'm a teacher, I've got the whole summer off, but I find every year that I think I'd prefer to do one 2 week trip rather than 2 1-week trips. If you do 2 one week trips, you technically gain a couple of nights, but you've got all that packing and unpacking, laundry and all that stuff that Dan never has to do, and I always have to do. I finally talked him into 1 two week trip this year. For one thing, I hate flying. If I'm going to fly, it had better be for a good, long trip.

In 2004, we had bought plane tickets on Air Train out of our hometown. Then a week before we were to leave, Air Tran called me at work to see if I'd be willing to take a bump -- to 2 days later -- in exchange for RT tickets. I was appalled. They were oversold for about 5 days straight. I ended up compromising with them... we drove about 3 hours to a larger airport and caught a plane there. Still got the RT tickets, but ended up never using them. And we'd flown out of our hometown when we went in 2000. Both times, we had bad experiences. Once we missed a connecting flight (due to our originating flight being late) and had to wait six hours for the next flight. For the other flights our connection flights were delayed. So let's just say we're fairly familiar with the Atlanta airport. Hours and hours spent sitting there with 3 kids.

I just couldn't do the connecting flight thing again. This trip, we're doing nonstop. It means driving to the major airport and man, didn't I hear Kiah griping about the extra 3 hours. But I'd rather spend my 3 hours in the van, with the DVD player going, and enjoying my pretty new Uplander, than I would stuck in an airport miles and miles from home. So we booked almost a year early with Midwest. When I was a kid, my family flew Midwest to Chicago all the time. I'm kind of feeling nostalgic about our airline choice. It was the right price, great times for the flights and the all important non-stop flights.

So air is done. Lodging should be easy, right? (Pardon me while I roll with laughter. We are the worst at deciding on lodging. For any trip. Unless someone gives us a free condo. Then we're satisfied. Otherwise, we're continually debating cost vs. features vs. room size and so on. You'll see.)

Now that it's officially tornado season in the Midwest how I could I not read this? :lmao:

Great start - I can already tell that this is going to be quite enjoyable. :thumbsup2

Edited: Your husband really does look like President Clinton!!

I am here too.. enjoying your pre trip report already:thumbsup2 Looking forward to reading more.

Your husband really does look like President Clinton!!

He would be so thrilled to know that I put that out there for everyone to read. :lmao: He actually asked if I could photoshop his hair darker in a photo once. The man is a little concerned about the premature gray. I say, better gray than bald...

Looking forward to reading more.

Thanks so much for reading along! I'll be updating again soon!

Your title made me laugh out loud! :rotfl:

Hello Kim!!! ThunderhockeyFan here. I am still jealous of your long WDW trip but enjoyed reading your pre trip report.

Just subscribed--great report so far! My son will be 13 this May, and he sounds a lot like your son. Very brave and manly at home, but don't try to get him on any big rides!

Denise

Your title made me laugh out loud!

Hey, I live in a double wide, so I can make fun of trailer parks. :) Seriously, one of our favorite lines in Cars.

And look... there's Mrs. Grumpy, my fellow Branson lover!! Thanks for posting!

Heck, I'll be doing good to get him on It's A Small World. :lmao: OK, he's a little better than that, but it should still be an adventure. Probably one that will involve a lot of pins for bribery...

Hey we are in a double wide also up here in Newton! Hate this time of year.

Part 2 Our Lodging Journey

This part of our trip planning has literally consumed months of decision making, so I feel it's only fair to take you back about a year, and set the scene.

wilderness.jpg
Mid-June 2006, we're staying at The Wilderness Campground near Silver Dollar City (in Branson, MO... told ya I'd be bringing it up). It's evening and Dan and I are sitting on the porch, in wooden rockers, drinking some adult beverages while our kids are playing. That picture you see, that's me, after said beverage, about the time we're having this conversation.

As we had the year before, we were talking about going to Disney the following year. It didn't work out for 2006, but in 2007, we'd just have to make it work. If that meant staying off site, eating all fast food... we'd make it work.

So the great "where do we stay" debate begins.

Oh my gosh, I cannot make up my mind where to stay when we go to Disney. Back at our cabin, I really was fine with staying offsite. I even thought I'd be the one who did the "offsite can be just as fun as onsite" trip report that everyone read.

For a bit more history, in 2004, we stayed at Port Orleans Riverside. Loved it. I mean, really, really, loved it at POR. We were in building 15, literally across a parking lot from the bus stop. Loved the pool. Loved the food court. Loved the atmosphere.

Except we're a family of 5, and it's hard to live in one room for 8 nights when there's 5 of you. I'm a selfish woman, and I need my me time. One of my more humbling Disney experiences is sitting at Pizzafari, bawling my eyes out because Dan was ticked that there were no straws at AK. True story. It happened. Was I bawling because of Dan's straw annoyance? No, of course not. It was one of those moments where the pressure of being with my family and a part of the Disney magic 24/7 just caught up with me. I'd like to avoid that on this trip, if possible.

So we looked at vacation homes. Booked one. Then I had a nightmare that we got all the way to Florida and the house was trashed and there was nothing we could do. Cancelled the vacation home. Hey, I believe in signs/premonitions/superstitions. Booked the Nick Hotel for the duration, at an amazing rate. As I'm typing in January, we still haven't cancelled it. I'm about 90% sure we won't be staying there, but can't bring myself to cancel it because we got such a great rate. On the other hand, I don't really like Nick, I'm a kindergarten teacher and think that the atmosphere at the Nick Hotel would likely drive me right up a wall, and this trip is all about me, right?

Then our onsite options... thought about the All Star Family Suites, but they just don't appeal. The idea of 2 bathrooms sounds great, but the rooms themselves just don't do it for me. Nor does the All Star atmosphere. Actually had the Contemporary booked, and made our dining plans with the assumption we'd be staying there. It's been my dream ever since I was a wee girl, riding on my mom's lap on the monorail.

And then we finally decided. Port Orleans Riverside. We had to go back. It was a lot of things. We could afford the Contemp, but it was just so much money. I'd sit with my figures and look at how much it would cost to stay at POR and then think of just how I could spend the $1500 we'd save. That's a lot of money in my life, and could buy a lot of things. In fact, it could buy an awful lot of Mr. Potato Head parts, I was thinking.

Dan really wanted me to have that Contemporary experience. If that's what I wanted, he would have made it happen for me. But he really loved POR. He wasn't so thrilled about the whole double bed thing, but hey, I've lost 50 pounds since then. Maybe we'd fit better. Of all of us, though, he really loved POR. He loved the food court, the pools (both feature and quiet) and the busses. He had nothing but praise for the place. And I like routine and sameness. I don't like the unknown. I knew POR, and I knew we'd love it there. The kids were talking about the pool and the food court and running to get me Caffeine Free Diet Coke in my mug every night before bed. How, oh how, could I deny them that small joy of waiting on their mother, hand and foot?

So I emailed our travel agent and asked her very nicely, apologizing profusely, to move us to Riverside. It's our place, and this will probably be our last chance to stay there. From here on out, it's going to be the family suites for us. Which is OK, I'm just not really a value resort kinda girl. I do like to pamper myself, even it it's only a little bit.

And because I hate to post anything without including photos, here's some from our 04 trip to Riverside. Can you feel my love for the place in these photos?

Next up, our dining plans.

Hey Miss Kim, I know you from the Branson Board!!! We are doing the every other year Disney thing now. 2007 is a Branson year but 2008 we will be returning to Disney. We are trying to decide which resort. Last year we treated ourselves to the Contemporary but have stayed at Riverside many times and love it there! Love your photos!

As I mentioned earlier, I've lost a lot of weight in the last 2 years. There are several factors involved with that, but one factor that will impact our trip is that I no longer eat as much as I used to eat. Something else we needed to consider when thinking about dining is that our 2 oldest children are now "Disney adults." I actually had a CM from Disney Dining laugh when I called them that, but that's what they are... adults no where but in the land of Disney, where they will be charged $30 for a buffet where they will eat $3 worth of food.

So when we started planning this trip, I learned about the Disney dining plan.

Of course we don't need a dining plan, I thought. Dining plans are for people who drive Uplanders and shop at Dillards.

Oh wait, we do that.

But... we don't order appetizers and dessert when we eat out (usually), and with the big kids needing to eat off the adult menu, I couldn't picture any way that the dining plan would be economical for us.

We're simple folk, I thought. We don't need no stinkin' dining plan.

I kept reading about it, though, and finally decided it was time to pull out a calculator and really look at what our meals were going to cost us at Disney. First, I calculated the cost of the table service and counter meals that I would do if we didn't have the dining plan. This included sharing some counter service meals, not ordered an appetizer/dessert at table service meals, etc. Made sure I included tax and tip in everything.

Then I compared it to the cost of the dining plan.

And discovered something interesting. We could pay for our meals out of pocket. Or we could do the dining plan. It didn't matter which we did because it was going to cost us the same. Within about $25, the same amount either way I figured it.

Actually, doing it out of pocket would be a bit more because when I did my figuring, I forgot to include snacks and we usually budget about $20/day for snacks when we're on vacation. The real push for the dining plan was that with the dining plan, we'd get 12 table service meals instead of the 8 that I considered essential and non-negotiable for our Disney trip.

So here they are...

My essential 8:

1. Liberty Tree Tavern. Dan's favorite place in 04. Probably his favorite place to eat ever. We've got to go back; it's his only request.
2. Sci Fi. I don't really love the food that much, but the kids loved it and I like the atmosphere. It's an experience, and that's one of the reasons I go to Disney... to have experiences. So it went on the list.
3. Chef Mickey's. I've got 2 pictures of us in front of that big plate. One with Ches in my arms, one with her barely peering over the plate. Gotta have one from this trip.
4. Princess Storybook Breakfast. This was a Ches request, and I'm still having daydreams about those flakey cinnamon rolls. It wasn't hard to convince me.
5. Donald's Breakfastosaurus. A Tater request, and again, not hard to convince me. AK is our favorite park, and getting in early and doing this character meal sounds like too much fun.
6. Crystal Palace. But only if I could get it for 8 am. I didn't so much want the Pooh characters as much as I did the getting into the MK early thing. I feel like I'm a rule breaker, just planning to get in early. And I do love me a good breakfast buffet.
7. Lilo & Stitch Breakfast at Ohana. Ches didn't request this one, but I did it for her. The girl loves that movie. It makes her giggle and I love to hear her giggle. Gotta go see Lilo and Stitch. OK, mostly I want to see Ches see Lilo and Stitch. And take pictures. Cuz that's what I do.
8. Prime Time Cafe: Dan's second favorite place to eat in the world. (3rd favorite would be Dixie Stampede. Just in case you're wondering.) He's gotta go there and have the pot roast because I just don't make it often enough. Probably because I hate pot roast.

And our other choices:

1. 1900 Park Fare. Hey, it's Cinderella. And Prince Charming. We needed a table service place, and buffets work well for us. (BTW, I'll only eat buffet when I'm on vacation. I normally hate them.) Ches will love it. Kiah might actually let her guard down and enjoy it. It should be an experience.
2. Ohana's for dinner. I'm all nervous about this one. Dan is a picky eater -- no onions, no tomatoes, no peppers, nothing too spicy. (I love all those things. It drives me crazy to live with him and not have any flavor in my food. But I do it cuz I luv him.) I'm just not sure how this place will go over. Oh, and I think I've forgotten to mention that Tater is pretty much a vegetarian. He'll sometimes eat a burger if we're in a restaurant, but he often goes days without eating any meat. So again, not sure how this place will go over. But we just have to try it.
3. Le Cellier. Mr. Picky Pants is just not sure about this place. We only eat steak when he wins free steak from Schwans. I know, however, that he'll love the soup, bread and mashed potatoes. He'll love the steak, too. I always know what my man will like and he's going to come out raving about this place. He's tried to talk me out of this ADR for months, but I'm holding strong. He's gonna love it.
4. Garden Grill. I wanted to eat here so bad on our 04 trip, and we never did. So it was a definite for this trip. I know the menu is very close to the LTT menu, so I've put them at opposite ends of our trip, hoping Dan will like GG as much as LTT. If not, at least I finally got to eat there. ;)
5. ESPN Club. Hey, if my men have to sit through not one, but two, Princess meals, I can handle one meal in a sports bar, right? My first instinct for this spot in our itinerary was a World Showcase restaurant, but let's face it, we are not adventurous eaters. One look at the menu for ESPN Club, and I knew it was the place for us. Because the ESPN Club doesn't take ADRs (which totally freaks me out), we'll leave early one afternoon, head over for dinner, then go to Epcot for Illuminations.
6. Rainforest Cafe. I know it's not on the dining plan. But I love this place. The same part of me that gets a little giddy every time I walk into a kindergarten classroom is the same part that slid this ADR right past Dan. I mean, how many times does a girl get to eat dinner in a Rainforest?

So that's about where we stood when I started writing down the details of our trip on December 31, 2006. I've tried to update every few weeks since then, and I'll be posting those updates over the next few days.
